fabia vrs chrome grill surround sprayed black

Featured Replies

Quick question, this is going to be one of the first things I do to my vRS when I get it but do you need a new surround? Can't you just take the old one off, paint it and stick it back on ??

If you can't work that out for yourself then perhaps you should give up before you start.

hmmmm id like to colour code mine *thinks*

Do you have pics of that on your car joff?

I'm bored and fancy doing something to the car and spraying that surround is high on my list.

Nope, the pics are just a photoshop - the painted grille's ready but the bodyshop incorrectly sprayed the ENTIRE grille silver (to call it gash is putting it mildly!). So I've got to carefully unclip the black section from my current grille and put it into the silver surround.

I have to say, the black surround on a black car works really well on the fabia, I do like it. That silver one looks horrendous though!

You could....... But i would think the car would be off the road while you had it sprayed cos you have to remove the entire grille & surround........ I suppose if you were off work for a few days or a week etc it could be an option.....

I just liked the idea that if the new colour coded surround flakes at some point in the future, (And the bodyshop were quite honest with me and told me they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't flake etc....), i have the original chrome surround to put back on the car.

I picked mine up today from the bodyshop and gave it a couple of coats of zymol when i got in....... Just got to pop the new Skoda badge on then fix it to the car....... I'm sure the tutorial i saw mentions having to glue the badge on but the one i've got from the stealers already has a sticky pad on the back.....

Cheers

Dave.

You're obviously not a fan of Everton Mints then

Well fitted the new surround today....... Took about 15 mins cos the chrome surround's last couple of clips just didn't want to let go.

I'm gonna keep the existing surround and re-fit it if i have probs with the paint on the new colour coded surround. (I do a lot of motorway miles).

Anyhows....... A couple of pics of the finished product.

I had my surround grille painted two times myself and the paint had come off each time, even though I have sanded the chrome so I reduced the shiny finish and primed afterwards. I did not take the entire chrome layer off since it's almost impossible to do it by sanding.

I know people with enough patience who have ripped off all the crome layer using a kitchen knife. That is the only solution that will last I guess. Otherwise it will chip-off sooner or later :(

I also have seen for the new jetta some mods done on the chrome by attacking it with muratic acid.

Here are a few pics of mine: Fabia by akebono (original chrome grill modded into a badgeless one).

I painted mine myself quite a few thousand miles ago and have no problem with chipping (apart from when I took a bit off with a screwdriver accidently:O )

When I was "sanding" the chrome all I did was lightly key the chrome, then painted some primer and then painted if that helps:thumbup:

Dave (WaveyDavey), where did you get those headlamp protectors from and how much, they look spot on :D

Hey up matey......... They are the standard Skoda one's. I got them from the dealers last week when i collected the new grill surround. They were £30-odd inc. free fitting. They were having a promotion on accessories.

The other things i'm gonna get this next week or two are a couple of boot pockets that fit behind the rear wheelarches. They are black leather-look and are only £12 each. My first aid box will go in one and i'll use them both for storing all the little odds and sods that are laying around the car. (Piccies below)
