A4(B5) Airbag

Featured Replies

Right boys and girls.

Mate has a 97-98 (R Reg) TDI 110 (Red 'i") and has a babba on the way and needs to disable the passenger side airbag for obvious reason.

Can and if so how can it be done? Hopefully this will be a good opertunaty for a mate to but me a VAGCOM cable

Anyhelp will be appriciated as im going to be its uncle n0b head :D

There wasn't a switch on mine.

Might be doable on VAG COM, but personally I wouldn't chance it and would put the child in the back.

Thats the same deal with his.

I couldn't find a switch and told him to put the nipper in the back

Well even if it was switched off with VAG COM there is only one way to test that it work.

Having seen first hand how powerful those things are, I wouldn't chance any ones kid in the front seat just in case

I know it is possible for it to be done on all Skoda's including the Superb so I would imagine similar would be available on the Passat and other cars alike.

There is a kit that the dealers can fit which is basically a resistor, some stickers and a couple of cable ties. They then write to the manufacturer and it is logged against the vehicle database.

It is however not recomended to carry children under 12 years in the front of the car.

Neither Volkswagen or Audi recommend having small children in the front, however as Stu said there is a kit available from the dealers which as well as being electronically diabled allows a physical disconnection.

I thought that it was ok to put a real nipper in the front seat though as they are in a proper baby chair?

Will let him know about the kits though as i was going to be more than a VAGCOM jobby

Rear facing seat isn't ever allowed where there is an air bag.

If you do the and the bag goes off the child is decapitated and their head sent at great speed out of the back of the car. Not a nice thought.

There is a kit available, it has to be physically disconnected then switched via vag-com. You must also sign a disclaimer to say u are authorising this to be done as well as displaying a sticker on the dashboard to say it is inactive.
