unable to connect to unsecure sites

Featured Replies

hi there

i was over my neighbours house this weekend and they asked me to look at their computer basically they can't connect to any unsecure websites yet they can conect to secure banking sites

i checked everything i could think of does anyone have any experiance of this type of problem

What OS, Browser, Firewall etc is being used?

Can't be specific, but I'd suspect browser and/or firewall settings being on "highest level" security.

it don't work with mozilla or ie6 no firewall i've defaulted all settings still no joy

thanks for the replies

After some Googleing (though I was right - had same problem with brother-in-laws computer)

Well, first make sure that your settings are OK.

Internet Options, Advanced Tab...tick 'Use SSL 2.0' and 3.0, some sites I've seen require TLS 1.0.

Since you didn't mention, make sure you are using the high encryption IE...ActiveX not blocked completely...

You didn't mention if you formatted, are you sure the virus is eliminated? Run those tools again.

Get IEFix from here:

And Winsockfix from here:

Also, if the above doesn't work

There are a number of problems that can occur because the Windows component that processes digital signatures is damaged. Symptoms include an inability to connect to secure Web sites, error messages when you try to use the Windows Update site, problems signing into Windows Messenger or MSN Explorer, an error message when you try to install SP1 or when you try to install programs or drivers that use digital signatures. You can rectify the problem by re-registering several files. To find out how to do this, see KB article 813442 at:

Detecting digital signing issues in Windows XP

Hmmm, had skimmed over your question - must admit because I thought it was the same problem the brother-in-law had.

Sure it must be a case of frigging about with the advanced settings in IE.

As a By the Bye, if experimenting, to 'see' the changes you will probably have to shut IE down and restart it - maybe even reboot.

Can I ask if you've a full keyboard - only have read one or two of your threads and takes me about three times longer to decipher (-;

Or is it a case of living up to the 2nd part of your moniker ? (-:

Firewall either on the computer or router used to access the internet accidently blocking port 80 as used by http? https uses port 443 so would still work if 80 is blocked.

Wonder if there is any malware that blocks port 80.

I don't like typing and yes I am quite lazy or so my wife tells me so between the two I tend to cut corner's when posting. Punctuation doesn't come naturally to me either.

Is this better?

Thank's for your help

There's only the window's firewall and an ADSL modem

Magic.

Was thinking, guy can set up / tinker with computers, has VAG-COM, has ICE etc, obviously drives - yet his posts (especially long sentences) are SOOO hard to make sense of.

Hope you don't take offence but it will help others too.

Cheers.

BTW

Still Googleing for the answer - but found nothing more.

Nope, keep coming up with IE7 & Vista (in all permutations) problems re accessing sites, but you stated IE6 so I presume it's an XP system.

Think you'll have to prat about with the Advanced settings - possibly try anti-spyware / malware as Maffwilson is suggesting.

Sorry it is XP I tried using security task manager which didn't show anything that shouldn't

With a bit of luck someone more knowledgeable than myself (scoff, (-: ) will come along and all will be well.

Practise makes perspex

Yep. What he said. Check your firewall software or better still uninstall it for now and see if this cures it. Turn off Windows Firewall and check router settings if applicable then deduce from then. A process of elimination is what you need to do.

Just thought - have your friends always had this problem or is it something that has recently manifested itself ?

In other words - is it worth trying a system restore to some point some months ago.

Failing that - what about an IE Repair ?

Repair Internet Explorer 6
