Rusting Hubs...

Featured Replies

My VRS 170 TDI has 4 rusting hubs - has anyone else experienced this?

McGyver (Irish member) has had his hubs replaced under warranty (Octy 2) for the same reason.

Unfortunately it seems this is a common trait. Mine are also starting to look rusty and have been considering giving them a lick of paint.

Shocking news! So steel forgings exposed to the elements get rusty?

A touch of Hammerite should do it, as Steve says. Wire brush first to remove the rust.

Mine are heading this way - I have been threatening for a while now to paint them.

Will get round to it someday.

By hubs I'm guessing you mean the centre of the brake disc?

You cant actually see the hub unless your underneath.

Yes, thats what I mean.

It is very visible through the spokes of the wheel.

They all appear to go the same way, especially with all the crud that comes off the road, unsightly, but no threat to you our your vehicle.

As some one above paint them if the cause you visual grief.

Got a pic of the bits you actually meet, I assume you don't mean the face that mates with the wheel but the bits around it before it forms the disc surface?

This happened to mine - in fact they were like it when I picked it up!

The dealer repainted them for me though and they are fine still.

Mine are slightly rusty but nothing to much to worry about, you can see them quite clearly through the Pegasus spokes though.

Like above I presume we are talking about the bit of steel between the wheel and the disc face.

My TDi vRS is has the same issue with the visible part of the brake disc. I'm also considering painting them. Glad i'm not alone with this. What paint would people recommend.

Hammerite should be fine or if you want that extra touch of luxury get caliper paint.

I have rust on one of my brake disc centres, i thought it was a bit quick to come through but i think i will just give them a lick of paint next time i take my wheels off for cleaning.

Thanks guys - I'm pushing the dealer to repaint them - why should I get my hands dirty if someone else will do it under warranty for me?? Glad to hear that Jonno Vrs had his done by dealer and problem has not come back.

The demonstrator I took for a spin had the rust issue and made it look cheap.

Looking at a few cars in our local showroom yesterday they seem to have been

painted the same colour as the wheels and look much better.

I really wouldn't think it was a warranty issue myself but if you can get it done then go for it.

Car's in today being done...

Finally got round to painting mine myself today with some Hammerite which I'm hoping will stand up to the heat (time will tell I suppose!). Pleased with the results and the paint I used is a perfect match to the alloy wheel so I used the opportunity to touch up a few scuffs on those too
