Featured Replies

as my avatar may hint at i am shortly moving to canada. i have a single region dvd player that we are intending to take with us cos i dont want to have to sell all my dvds. a friend seems to think that the dvd player wont work on a canadian tv because of the format difference. any thoughts?

cheers!

You will be fine. No problems, as long as canada is 240v.

Do a search on net to find out specs of a canadian telly? Are they 60hz NSTC?

Then cross check with specs for output/connections on dvd player. Alternatively buy a multi-region canadian dvd player when you get there and play your discs on that. Only same as buying foreign dvds to play in UK:)

(think uk is only place to use SCART, but open to being prooved wrong:P)

Canada is 60Hz/110v mains supply though which could be a problem ;)

Would also imply that the TV is NTSC as that is 60Hz and PAL 50Hz (although it can be 60/100Hz).

Have a look at the back of the DVD player see if it can accept the 90-250 voltage as many power supplies can and if it can output NTSC.

Failing that pick yourself up one that does both of these and is multi-region over here before you go and you can watch both the region 1 and region 2 discs :)

Pat I'm not sure if you can buy multi-region out there as the US makes you out to be a thieving pirate if you do and this may have passed onto canada too :(

thanks for your thoughts, i'm not concerned about the voltage as i've managed to get hold of a step up converter it was just the format thing. gonna check the player once swmbo has finished watching dirty dancing for the umpteenth time!!

edit: just checked the specs on my player in the manual and it says;

Signal System: PAL 625/50, PAL 525/60, NTSC.

is that good news? would i be able to connect it up via the S Video output?

cheers!!

It may be possible to convert your DVD player to Multi Region. There is a website (sorry cant remember the name but found it via Google) that lists DVD players in the UK which can be easily changed. I changed my cheapo Phillips one to Multi Region simply by going into the setup page and entering numbers via the remote in a certain sequence amd hey presto !

You should still get away with it, most if not all modern TVs can handle PAL/50 and NTSC/60. Afterall it is now possible to buy region2 NTSC disks in this country that play at 60hz. A modern TV will sync with whatever signal is being sent to it, I know mine does.

Going/viewing from NTSC source onto PAL screen is easy, going from PAL source to NTSC screen is not so, which is what you want to do.

So your friend is right I'm afraid.

SCART is an evil French invention and is sadly a Europe wide plague. Hopefully HD will see it off.

That will change the voltage but what about the frequency?

Forget the voltage or region capabilities of your player, the important thing is for your television in Canada to be able to receive and show PAL signals. If it doesn't accept it, you'll not be able to watch any of your UK DVDs

Seems a lot of hassle for a $50 DVD player

Yes. Set it to NTSC and you can use any output. It'd be worth seeing if it supports RGB on SCART, and seeing if you can find a telly there with RGB inputs, though as I understand it component is more popular in the US and Canadia.

In the US, multiregion players are far less common than here but I believe they are available. I'd investigate whether you can get a multiregion player over there - that'd save you an awful lot of effort.
