Laptop - spec sounds good mut name?

Featured Replies

I was looking at the Aldi catalogue, and see they have a laptop available from 8th March.

It is a Medion MD98200 and the spec sounds very good, but I am a little bit unsure about the name, etc.

Does anyone have any experience of these?

I bought my Power Craft pressure washer from Aldi and I know it is just a rebadged Karcher (with a better warranty!) so I wondered if this could be a good buy as well?!

It does come with a 3 year warranty which is much longer than most laptops come with as standard.

The spec is:

Pentium Dual Core T2060 1.60GHz 533Mhz FSB 1MB L2 Cache

Intel 950 Graphics

15.4" WWXGA widescreen

1024MB DDR2 SDRAM

120GB HDD

multi-layer DVD Writer

Wireless LAN

DVB-T TV Tuner card and aerial

comes with Vista, carry bag, remote control and mouse.

On paper it sounds really good, but I am a bit worried about the build quality.

Any info gratefully received!

Should be fine - build quality will be on a par with most other laptops...

Rob.

I can't comment on this badge, but there are only a few companies in the world who actually manufacture laptops; by and large they're all badge-engineered around parts asembled in the same few factories in the Far East.

It will be on par with other low price laptops.

If you want an idea of build have a look at PC Worlds own brand etc ones and that is approximately what you will get. (EDIT: I think in fact that PCW might even sell medion, and I know people who have had them)

I assume you know that aldi sell out of these things in the first few hours.

Medion are fairly well known in europe and tend to be decent quality.

It will be interesting to see how much they plan to charge for this.

As usual you'll need to be sat outside the store before they open to get one

Too true. A mate of mine recently took his girlfriend up to Aldi to buy the desktop they had. They were queuing for about 30 minutes before the store opened, and the store manager had to come out with leaflets with numbers on that he had signed to give to the first 17 people. That was all they had in stock, although a laptop, being smaller in storage, may have more stock than that.

It is being advertised for £539.99

thanks for the info guys!

i have TWO medions.. the lappy Im typing on at the moment is a MIM 2080 and I also have a SIM 2000.. both are pretty good machines to be honest. they connect readily to the Interweb, ( altho the Sim 200 needs a wireless card, the 2080 is wireless ready.. ) both upload/download play etc as they need to and only prob Ive had with both as it happens is the fact that after almost two years of service from both/either , the *jack* (where you plug he power supply lead into) has just been replaced on the Sim, and will be done within the next week or so on the Mim.. got these parts of an E-Bay store for a couple of quid apiece an did the repair myself..

My last Laptop was also a Medion... I got it direct from their website as a refurb unit.

It was very heavy, but had great spec for the time and was only just over £300...

I've now got a Core 2 Duo Macbook which I lurve :)

I often shop at both Aldi and Lidl - and have had some magnificent bargains they quality is always good - but as previous posts state you need to be there before the shop opens and first in the queue !

The spec looks ok to me.
