Finally got my Fabia... and I have a worry

Featured Replies

Well, finally I managed to find a Fabia in decent conditions for a decent price, so I finally have my own car. Yay! :)

However, as luck would have it, it is giving me a couple of worries. First of all, when idling, say, at a traffic light, every two or three seconds there is a sort or rattle, shakey thing going on. The cars shudders, very lightly. Is it normal?

The other thing that concerns me is that the handbrake lever feels a bit, how can I say, scratchy, but maybe that can be solved with some grease?

Which motor is it? Is the tickover steady during these blips?

The engine is a 1.4 v8. I should have mentioned it before.

I'm sorry to ask, but what is the tickover?

Who's going to post the obvious response first??????

idle can be a little rough on the 8V's. Look at the RPM on the revcounter as the engine is ticking over when warmed up- should be between 9-10. As long as it doesn't deviate wildly should be OK. Perhaps it needs a service if it hasn't been done in a while.

Nobody - we're all on best behaviour (or not paying attention) I guess

I saw the 8v / v8 typo and chose not to mention any mustangs. ;):D

Alright Mil?

If the revs do go up a little bit during these little blips, it might want looking at.

Does it only do it when warm? Could be the lambda sensor if so....they can cause a funny idle. I'd say easiest way is a diagnostic or get it to someone with VAG-COM to have a look.

I was so close....but I am now reformed.....

yeah right

Someone I know has Fabia 01 perhaps 02 reg petrol with similar behaviour (has had it from new). She asked soon after she'd bought it about this 'near stalling' at lights and was told by the garage that the mixture is altered so the car uses less fuel whilst idling ( can only vouch for what she has told me).

Wow, what a silly mistype :o The revs counter stays around 9 when idle, so I suppose it's nothing to worry about.

FWIW If I run my engine with the bonnet up, it has a lot of movement (as if it's not nailed down properly LOL), but I gather this is pretty normal for 1.4 8Vs. It's not erratic whilst idling though.

As mentioned, has it been serviced recently by a Skoda garage, or can you get it to one who can do a computer diagnostic check to see if that throws up any problems?

Sorry can't help on the handbrake, as I know nothing. Hopefully it holds though, or are you parking it in gear to be on the safe side?

Regards

Mo

According to the Serv ice Schedule, it is 6000 more miles or 3 months before a service, but tell you what, I'll go ahead and have it serviced early. That would at least give me some peace of heart.

The handbrake holds, and I always park the car in gear anyway, but I've never parked, say, on a hill or in other stressing locations.
