Time for a Forum Split ?

Featured Replies

I look at the ' Fabia' forum, and wonder if its time to split, by making a 'Fabia-make it into something different' and a Fabia- help and repair' forum.

Yes , I am an older person ,and Fabia owner , and get fed up with posts like:-

' I got XXX miles an hour yesterday!'

' Can I fit a Super DeLuxe TurboCharger to my 1.4 car?'

' How many Amplifiers can I fit in my boot space?

etc etc.

I use the site to obtain sensible information in owning and running a Fabia . I have a Technical background ,and am not phased by how to repair or fit something. I post helping others on Electrical Problems mostly . I cannot help with 'VAG readings ' and leave that to others. with Garage connections .

what about the posts which are neither about modifying, or repairing ?

(like the 4 million threads about the Ltd Ed)

will there be a new forum board created for the Fabia mk 2 ?

you can split it down as much as you like...IMHO best way to do it would be

Make - Model - Variant - Activity

Make = skoda

model = fabia, octavia

variant = vrs, 1.4, 1.9tdi

activity = mods, running/ownership, questions relating to, general

but at the end of the day, theres no right or wrong way.

my personal opinion is that its ok as it is, but this part of the forum (fabia) does seem to be dominated by VRS owners (which doesnt bother me, since i am one! - or will be in 3 days time!)

possibly a fabia/fabia vrs split?

I very much doubt that there is going to be a divide between 'boy-racer' Fabia maintenance and 'Shopping Cart' Fabia care.

You can see clearly by the title what the thread is going to consist of, if you can't then just hover your mouse over the title and you get the first line of the thread.

With out being rude, most of the people who are trying to fit speakers in their boot and achieving high speeds are freedom members and financially supporting the site - something you currently don't. If you were to join Freedom you could post in the 'ask a tech' forum - where you might get more 'technically' answers that you are after.

For what it is worth - fastest I have ever gone 135mph GPS

My car already has a turbocharger, but wouldn't be put off a bigger one

Not really into amplifiers in the boot personally.

possibly a fabia/fabia vrs split?

Ah...but then where do you put a post that affects both models? :rubchin:

Rob.

Loosely translated you want a forum that only deals with the things that you're interested in? There is an Ask a Tech section that may be more to your taste perhaps? The threads do have titles so you don't have to read them all, you know... :D

JMTPW.

What forum would Devonutopia use

What forum would Devonutopia use

for problems affecting both, you could use either.... although i take your point...

indeed - where would you post if you had a generic problem with all makes of skoda?

in databasing, the fewer levels of data structure you have, the better.... 1st and 2nd rule of normalisation - eliminate groups of data where needed and simplify

i like the existing structure, but my point is that the forum is dominated by the vrs, (and as correctly pointed out - the ltd edition and new skoda).... my suggestion is to split it at this level..

alternatively, leave it as it is, and over time, other models of fabia will i dare say come and go.

There should be a sticky made in big, bold text along the lines of:

Read your owners manual or go to the dealer rather than ask your stupid question here!

That should separate the wheat from the chaff.

As for the boy racer threads, I must admit I do quite like having a laugh at threads about big, flappy mud flaps, the nigh on supersonic capabilities of some Fabias and people asking what we think of their utterly bog standard Fabia.....no, no, wait! It's modified! Look at the window wipers!!

I like it! Be rude but prefix it with "without being rude," nice.:D

the nigh on supersonic capabilities of some Fabias

you mean they're not??!

To be fair, AndyPandy mentions in his original post that a lot of his comments on the site are to help people with electrical problems.

So although not financially, he does support the site.

Dear Andy Pandy,

You have been a member for 18 months, and made 52 posts.Possibly 51 of them being helpful in a technical way, and at least one of them being akin to a sulk.

As far as I know you can edit which forums you subscribe to, and if you can't bear for anyone else to have fun, don't read the posts that offend you.

I am glad you are an older Fabia driver, because that makes you almost a brother to me.

But unfortunately, like my brother you appear to be a pompous *****.

Although you may be really lovely and good looking and rich.

If this offends you, join Freedom for £12 quid, and then we can be on a par and have equal mutual disrespect for each other.

Please don't take any offence at this post, because I don't really exist, and I love you really.

HTH.

Like you, I got very annoyed with the tone and theme of some of the postings a while back. Then I discovered the Buddy/Ignore setting in the Control Panel. Try it. It's great for making irritations go away.

How about a Vs forum for those of us that didn't mind it? :P

Cool love it!!

Grumpy old men on the forum, I too am the wrong side of er 39 !!

but I have been there done that with modding and amps in the boot etc.

So I can see where the guy n gals of the go faster crew are comming from.

lets face it we all have one thing in common we love furbies.

if its a lowly 1.2 or a 2.0 or 1.9vrs

so chill out and dont start throwing your dummies out of your prams.

Everyone that has met Bryan knows he is a lovely man ( honest )

I am just a miserable sarcastic sod.

As Bryan said, there is an ignore button.

Feel free to ignore me:D

It's all done in the best possible taste!!! (Cunning Stunt aka Kenny Everett quote)

Big forum, lots of members, you can't please everyone :) It really is that simple.

Well said that man.

Although there could be a sub forum for people like me ( with just me in it, presumably.)

But surely a sub forum for lunatics isn’t really anything to do with Briskoda………….is it?

A Brisky splinter group! Vive la revolution!

You answered your own question there Hinny:rofl:

I understand andypandy's frustration at coming across some posts which aren't his cup of tea. And respect that, as well as his input in matters electrical.

The thing is that the forum caters to the entire spectrum of tastes from the conservative person who is capable of DIY work to maintain his/her car to the OTT modder.

The thing is that to separate the fabia forum is to perhaps lose tips, repair procedures, etc that apply to all Fabia models.

I enjoy reading all the model postings despite having the search filter that will remove some subforums. If it doesn't look interesting I simply don't read it.

I'm an older owner myself and enjoy my skoda, and get entertained by the antics of some, educated by the posts of others, try to help others with whatever advice I happen to have and above all enjoy the comraderie and spirit of this forum. I'm fortunate to have made some seriously special friends on here.

Cheers all

Spot on  This is one of the best car forums for advice and help, even if you're not a Freedom member, you will still get advice and help on any technical issues. Its a nice and relaxed forum - lots of friendly people, and hope it stays as it is, yes I dont find some of the posts to taste but most of them like Bas says are entertaining or educational, and some occasions try to help out. I wouldnt like an entirely heavy technical forum like the one I joined recently in which every post has to be examined and approved by a panel of moderators before it even appears on the forum and have about 40 rules and regulations to follow.
