how expensive and easy is it to make 250bhp+ with a DIESEL

Featured Replies

Same as the other thread really, but using the basis of a PD130 engine.

I guess it would be easier with a 150 though, but am interested in what's required from those in the know.

Oh, 1.9 SDi need not apply :D but I am after the advice of one owning it ;)

Not too tricky, depending on how long you need the 250 for.

OK, let's see if I remember;

Intercooler from PD150 Golf with piping

IHI variable vane turbo

Remap

Full exhaust

Think the injector units/fuel pump may also need to be uprated.

That should do it fairly easily, although it may be a tad smokey :D

Depends which car yuou are doing it on, I gather it would be easier with an Octy as the exhaust is less restrictive, there is tons of space for the Golf intercooler and there is generally mopre space to work.

Shame I got the SDI, or the trackday would have been interesting :D

Hybrid turbo, remap and zorst should see around 230bhp :D

On a Fabia, would be more on an Octy.

What sort of hybrid were you thinking of? How easy is it to swap turbos on the Fabia TDI? Remember on the Octy it was a pain as it is watercooled. DIY job or is it tricky?

If you want a laugh, try NoS, works better on diesels than petrols :D

but if its that easy why has nobody done it???

Ross Clarkes having a go, not sure on what he'd get though

Jon, the PD130 turbo is air cooled, the 150 is water cooled.

What turbo is fitted to the PD130? I only know the 1.8T turbos so have no idea what it is on the diesels.

Not that it matters really as I don't have a turbo :(

All I know is that it is an air-cooled variable vane turbo with a front mount intercooler. I don't think there is a dump valve on the 130, although I've heard there is on the 150.

I belive its a VNT-15 turbo on the Pd130

a VNT-17 on a 150.

problem is the cheapest way you think would be to add a 150 turbo to a 130, but they use different manifolds and downpipes, and chipped gains are marginal compared to the 130 anyway. the hybrid that seems to work best uses better bearings and a compressor from the V6 tdi.

Hybrid turbo may be an option in the future..... ;)

regarding NOS....

ive seen a vid of a Leon Cupra 4 tdi with nos to circa 300bhp smoking a ferrari 355. and it was smoking big time... (5 seconds before it blew up)

If I had a turbo, which I don't, I'd be on the 'phone at the moment ordering a VNT-15 hybrid turbo :D

Do the VNT-17 internals fit within the same housing? Just out of curiosity of course ;)

I *think* the vnt-20 is the one used on the v6 tdi

its not really worth using the 150 turbo due to it only really pushing a slightly higher sustained pressure, as people say, the comparison between a 130 and a 150 is minimal. except theres much more lag on the 150.

If i had the money that you have, which i dont, I'd be on the phone at the moment ordering a hybrid turbo, KW-v2, 312mm TT brakes, 17" alloys with *real* tyres, Miltek zorst and jabba remap :D

Hmm, think I must have bought the wrong car :(

Oh well, at least my SDI will be cheap to mod :D

NO NO NO NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We used to get just in excess of that bhp figure from the engine in our Golf Tdi Kit Car.

The engine was built by Lehmann and did a full season in the Britsh Rally Championship without a rebuild.

The sequential gearbox used to take a bit of hammer though with the mountain of torque that this unit was developing.

Mmmmmmmm GT-25 hybrid :D

btw if I was aiming for 250hp from the PD130, i'd do the following: :)

1. LPG bi-fuel conversion

2. Hybrid turbo

3. Injector work of some sort

4. Custom Intercooler/PD150 IC

5. Exhaust

6. Remap

If only....

oh and a heavy duty clutch might be needed to ;)

have a look in this weeks autosport.....vw racing are selling their 230 bhp golf - saw it at Brands last year, goes welll! they recon they can get 250 from it

Our PD demo Golf had 220 bhp.

Its that car that has just dontated its bit to my Fabia :)

Looking forward to the mapping next week

Mods so far engine wise are,

Green panel filter,

Mercedes MAF,

Full turbo back Milltek exhaust with bi-metallic diesel sports CAT,

Turbo Dynamics VNT17 hybrid turbo,

Custom AmD remap.

Ross,

Have you noticed much difference with the Merc MAF?

Was just gonna ask the same thing! ;)

Heard on SC.net that it does make a bit of difference.

  • 11 months later...

What type of hybrid turbo would you recommend to reach 235-250 BHP in a PD 130 such as my Passat?

What type of HP can the OEM VW injectors produce before upgrading?

Hmmm, 364 days since last post! :D

Interesting this should crop up though.

I think the general consensus is use the same type of turbo as you have now, but with uprated internal bits from another turbo... I think?
