RS = Rallye Sport or Racing Sport ?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just a question... Skoda RS = Rallye Sport or Racing Sport ?

I thought it was Ren Sport?

Ren & Stimpy?

It's vRS. Ford didn't take kindly to stealing their RS (Rallye Sport) badging!!

I know they are badged RS in Europe. God knows why though.

Don't think so. Hence the 'v'.

Skoda were using RS in europe back in the 70's as well, for the 200rs and 130RS and I think they had a RS accessories brand for the 1000mb as well, although I couldnt swear to it. I think some of their more limited specials might have born RS badging as well. Certainly Skoda have some historical claim to the RS badge as well.

It's only in the UK that Skoda have been forced to use the vRS badging, rather than the RS badge as Ford holds the trademark for it in the UK.

I thought the general consensus on here was that Skoda won, but decided to use the vRS anyway?

Yeah, that was my impression too. I'd always assumed Ford had won because Skoda didn't use the name, but was told last time this came up Skoda had won, hence the 'victory'!!

Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI PD vRS Estate

It's a tribute to Skoda's increasing prominence that it has had to change the badge used for its higher-performance cars over the years. There was a 130 RS back in the mid-70s, and although Ford had already claimed RS as its own by then the larger company didn't complain - if it noticed at all - that Skoda had decided to use the same initials.

Things were very different in 2000, when Skoda (now a much more significant brand thanks to investment from new owner Volkswagen) tried to reintroduce the badge for its most powerful Octavia. This time round, Ford was not at all happy, and insisted that Skoda should come up with an alternative. That's why the original hot Octavia was called vRS instead.

Of course, Fraud had a major cheek on them anyway, since Porsche first coined the term (short for Renn Sport in German or Race Sport in English) back in the mid 1950s.

I'm sure i read somewhere it means,''victory in rally sport.''
