PS3's scarce??

apart from being able to buy them pretty much anywhere you want?

The X-Box and HD drive is

I don't understand how Sony "forcing" blu-ray on us with the PS3 is a bad thing... It works as a DVD drive, Sony will continue to release games on blu-ray, so the worst that can happen is that blu-ray doesn't become the next dvd and we have to buy an HD-DVD player. By them building a BR drive into every PS3, they are going a long way towards winning the format battle. You have to choose to buy an HD drive for the 360, whereas the PS3 comes with a BR drive already built in. It looks a lot neater than having to add a drive onto the 360. And bear in mind how much BR players are by themselves... makes the PS3 look like a bit of a bargain! The 360 was £370 when it came out, so the PS3 is £55 more. Not an unreasonable difference considering the specification difference. It has a bigger hard drive as standard than the 360 does, and its very very easy to replace the hard drive with a larger capacity one (try doing that on a 360! Not impossible, but a damn sight harder) and it comes with a high-def drive built in! I think thats worth an extra £55!

but the thing is if you don't have a surround sound system and hi-def screen then there is no need to buy an HD player so the xbox is £125 cheaper which is 3+ games which is where it will hit Sony. A Mum and Dad buying a system for their kid/s will think why do we buy a Sony at £425 with no games or Xbox where for the same money your buying the console with extra's and games.

If you don't have hi-def, then why get a 360 either?

And surely Mum and Dad will just go and get a Wii as its considerably cheaper than either the 360 or PS3?

:iagree:

Might as well buy a Wii instead :D

As for the whole BR thing... we've already had a similar scenario with the PSP and the UMD and as already mentioned worst case it you end up with PS£ games being the only thing on the format.. not like we've never had games on a propriety format before :)

Do they still do UMD movies? Or have they died out with the advent of PC conversion software?

Only one I have is spiderman, and that was free from sony

Shame it went tits up tho.

I think "Homebrew" affected software sales for PSP. The down grading to firmware V1.50 and all the trickery that can be had from emulation and playing games on the memory card wiped a load of profits from Sony's coffers.

Sony should learn their lesson from this and I anticipate the PS3 being watertight in terms of copy games / chipping / "homebrew" I wonder if PS3 will request that PSP firmware is upgraded to a more stable version before it will pair with that device?

PS2 was always much more difficult to chip than Xbox. Sony seem to be market leaders in anti piracy and general tight Arsedness.

I noted that as soon as I switched on my PS3 it demanded that I upgrade the firmware to a newer version!

a debacle?

Compared with the PS3 rollout, yes. I can buy a PS3 now from the local shop if I want*

*Assuming I get sign off from Mrs Dodgy

Dave.

I got that free as well... still not watched that movie though.. :)

You can still get UMD movies but Sony have lost alot of support for the format from the film studios.

Who would really want to buy their dvd collection again though just so they could watch it on the move?

Sony would of been much better off launching an iTunes for movies.

I don't think they're losing as much as they make out to piracy as at the end of the day if piracy didn't exist people aren't going to buy every title they want only what they can afford.

They gamecube has pretty good (not impossible to get around though) anti-piracy measures and that didn't sell nearly as well as the xbox and PS2 both of which could run copied games without too much effort. The current nintendo DS is fairly straight forward to get copies running on it and sales are through the roof. Granted this is also possible with the homebrew/firmware downgrade etc on the PSP but Sony have spread horror stories about dodgy firmware that turns your psp into a brick etc. How true those are I've no idea but personally I'm happy to buy the odd game for mine.

Oh and when you get fed up of playing games on your new PS£.. clicky...

Never used a UMD movie on my psp, why bother when all you need to do is get a dvd ripper and conversion software and then stick it on a large memory stick. It uses less power to run like that too so it will last longer.

I'll probably buy a few blu ray films, but mainly either blockbusters that I want to see again, or favourite films, other than that I'll stick with dvd, whick I guess is the same with other people with both blu ray and/or hd dvd.

Yup, I have on mine at the mo:

Shawn of the dead

Back to the future

2 episodes of Scrubs

1 episode of Futurama

 Watched a few planet earth episodes on it at the weekend too

Exactly! :)

So Sony would of been better of with an iTunes style software for the PSP that will let you rip your DVD's or download a movie from an online store. There would of been nothing stopping Sony at that point bringing out an mp3/movie player for the people that don't want a PSP.

But they've missed that opportunity now :(

my mate brought his PS3 round today that he bought yesterday adn it was broken

a hard reset of the achine saw it working again though and tbh at the moment i'm not impressed really, the menu isn't as pretty as the 360's and the games didn't seem "that" good really graphics wise, he has sonic and ridge racer 7. sonic looked very bland and sparse and ridge racer looked ok but nothing special.

the one thing that id look good though was watching X-MEN-the last stand or whatever it is on BR but i can buy an HD-DVD drive for my 360 for £100 rather than the £425 on and PS3 :)

don't get me wrong i fully expect to be getting a PS3 but i see no point at the moment at all as the only thing i am interested in it for is HD movies and GT-HD but still very undecided about it.

i actually bought a ps3 after saying i wasnt gonna get one anytime soon

 its not a bad console its not as good as the 360 at the moment but that was to be expected due to lack of great games but its a decent console which can only get better . im on my second console my first one failed today it was only 1 day old i cant belive my 360 outlasted my ps3  but all is well i got it replaced :D

At least they have enough for stock for replacements to be available.

I'd hate it to have mine break down and the be told after months of pre-ordering and waiting and being able to buy one at normal (not rip-off ebay profiteering prices) that there weren't any replacements available  :D

I think the PS3 will slowly grow in sales. It's not a massive sellout from start because there aren't any real triple A titles out there at the moment. But once people get past the "games console" bit and the software evolves into providing lots of other features, excluding blu-ray which is of course already available, that's where its appeal will really grow.

I have Sonic too - bought if for swmbo, but rather dissapointed by it really :( It's not so much the PS3, it's just a carp game :(

I also have ridge racer and despite some slating reviews, I think it's a hoot. The graphics are very nice at 1080p and there is lots of detail around to be seen, etc, although the manic driving means you don't appreciate it much at first sight :P Online play is good too - was well chuffed when I saw my name pop up on the news ticker feed :o

And regarding the demo GTHD, if you have a PC USB steering wheel, plug it in. It works (although no force feedback at the moment) and it makes driving so much more fun. I'm glad and sad to say that in one car, I'm currently 15th in the world :o :O :o

To be honest I agree with you on that front, the menu is clear and easy to use rather than pretty (not as overly flash as the xbox screen, but the xbox one is nicer if not as clean looking).

Those 2 games are not the best looknig of the launch titles, Sonic looks the same on Xbox360 and is nothing special, and Ridge Racer, while a good game, is not as good looking as Motorstorm or Resistance:Call of man.

Are there any women obsessing about a toy costing £450?

i'm not saying i was expectiong sonic and ridge racer to be the be all and end all of the PS3 but i did expect a bit more :(

give it 12-18months when games start to appear that have been written especially for the console and i expect they will look amazing :)
