Ps3

yes they can as Blu-Ray is Sony's property and you need to licence media from them in order to create anything that uses it so yes they can say no :(

and there's not much point in having an HD movie player if you don't have HD equipment to watch it on.

True, but on a personal note at least I did not buy the PS3 primarialy as a blu-ray player, I brought it as a games console. wether it is better than the xbox360 or not, only time will tell. I picked mine up on the way home from work this morning and so far I am impressed. I probably won't do this often, but the internet function works well ;)

Mine just turned up and so far so good, i've never really got the whole HD is better than Blu Ray debate surely bigger is better??? Just started running FAH so we'll see how it goes :)

That was the case with PS2 as well, it took time for the developers to get to grips with the intricaces of the machine and it's hardware, whereas the Xbox relies on PC architecture and given that ir's a microsoft system, it more than likely has some similar code to windows that has been around in on form or another for 20 years, so it would have been be easier to make games anyway.

The hardware design of the PS2 is completely different to the PS3. The PS2 used a very strict assembly language which had its limitations. You just had to learn how to get the best out of a very limited instruction set.

The PS3 is the total opposite. You can get C / C++ compilers on a PS3 and the proper development language is far more flexible than what you could do developing on a PS2.

However, as you say, at the moment, it can appear a bit tricky as software is written differently and that takes some getting used to. There are far more possibilities, but only experience will allow you to exploit that :)

I recently went to a very interesting lecture which discussed the design of the cell processor and it's truly amazing what it can do when you look at the numbers. It's just a matter of time before developers fully tap into the potential available :D

My overpriced, destined to fail, overly complicated, porn censoring flash in the pan gimmick arrived today.

So far I'm not impressed. It's the wrong colour and I can't seem to find where to plug the cassette player in so I can load games.

I've just looked at prices on Ebay , and there doesn't seem to be much profit for the people who bought to resell

Blu-Ray is already dead though. Sony have said they will not allow porn on Blu-Ray, and it was the porn industry that settled the VHS vs. Betamax battle.

HD-DVD ftw ;)

But that was pre-Internet. Hardly anyone 'buys' porn these days, so a 'friend' tells me ;) I seriously doubt that the porn industry will have any say or influence.

Dave.

Yeah, funny as hell I think. Another forum that I read was pointing out some losers that had bout 20+ consoles on eBay and are now resorting to almost begging in order to sell them. I could have picked one up on the way home from a number of outlets, it's a much better managed rollout than the Xbox 360 debacle

Dave.

I've been out to the shops this morning and saw half a dozen places with them for sale.

Still no Wiis though!

I bought my PS3 yesterday morning and have been impressed with it. A good purchase :)

Currently enjoying F1.

I remember reading on another forum that some porn has already been released on Blu-Ray so maybe Sony will choose to ignore it rather than ban it.

Not so much better managed, just not the rush they expected. A friend of a friend of a friend owns a games console shop and has about 30 PS3's still for sale, and its only a small shop.

By all accounts, even across Europe, the launch has been extremely muted.

Apparently the first 100people who actually queued up at some big london store at midnight also were given 2k worth of 42" HD telly to play it on...

Yeah the lucky people got a free 46" Bravia HD TV worth £2500

One person had pre ordered 2 ps3's, so Sony gave him 2 tellys. Sony also payed for the people to get taxis home dure to fears of them getting mugged, and the first person in the queue was taken home in a stretch Hummer.

a bravia would be nice for my xbox :D

Aye, I heard about this off my dad. Lucky tw**s!

Ive put my PS3 on hold but going to have a play on my brothers tomorrow and set up a wireless network for him.

I think I'll wait for the price to drop, anyways, my Wii turned up from Germany on Thursday and I'm too busy trying to smash up the lounge playing baseball!

I spent a couple of hours setting HAL9000 up last night. It connected to my wireless network no problems. First thing I did was download the demo of GT HD so hours of fun to be had. I bought Call of Duty 3 ont way home from work today and I'm well impressed! I lnked it to the Cinema surround sound and it's brilliant with all rumbly explosions going off around you. I just can't tell who the feckin Germans are though. The graphics are on another level to the PS2 although not quite as smooth as I thought they would be, but 10 out of 10 for a first release game. I'm sure that there will be mind blowing graphics to come.

This evening I have plugged my old wireless keyboard and mouse into the PS3 and it's worked a treat. I was going to sell them but I now have a new use for them. Hurrah! I don't know if you can use the keyboard / mouse combination in games though. I imagine when the strategy games start trickling through that this will be an option built into the game. I'm using the keyboard to post this

sony have said that some games will be keyboard / mouse i think the next unreal tournament will be one of them with more to follow:thumbup:

good at last I'll be able to play FPS on a console, never could get the hang of using the controller for them, always preferred the mouse + keyboard combo of a pc

The PS2 and xbox controllers I've found to be pretty useless when it comes to FPS games... but the N64 and Wii controllers work quite well but they're still no match for a good keyboard and mouse... :)

a debacle? is it wrong that they made a product and released it pretty much on time and much much cheaper then the PS3?? the PS3 is available simply becausse it is over priced even as a super dooper tanning salon come giraffe factory along with everything else that it does. you can buy an xbox 360 premium pack with games and an HD-DVD drive for under

a debacle? is it wrong that they made a product and released it pretty much on time and much much cheaper then the PS3?? the PS3 is available simply becausse it is over priced even as a super dooper tanning salon come giraffe factory along with everything else that it does. you can buy an xbox 360 premium pack with games and an HD-DVD drive for under £400 yet a PS3 along is more like £450 so even as an HD player its expensive :)

The Xbox is just as expensive when you get it up to the spec, the reason there are so many packs avaliable is because they can't shift them either, although I have yet to see one at under £400 that includes the hd dvd drive.

so packs aside as you can get them for ps3 anyway, how much does it cost to get the xbox 360 up to ps3 spec (or as similar as possible)

XBox -

£280 with 20gb hard drive (£200 without £70 for hard drive)

Wireless controller- inc (£35 if core pack)

Wifi adaptor - £60

recargable battery for conroller - £15 with connector

Hd-dvd - £130

portable memory unit - £23 (64mb)

Xbox communicator - £15

for a hd dvd setup you are looking at £410 (or £330 if you do without the hard drive.

and for a full Xbox live setup and removable media for moving files between xboxs you are looking at £523

with the PS3 for £425 you get

60 bg hard drive that is replacable with any 2.5" SATA drive

wireless controller with recargable battery

Blu-ray

wifi

CF, SD and memory stick slots + usb flash drive support for moving files (so 1gb storage is about £15)

able to use any usb headet (say about £15)

which brings this up to £475 with a larger capacity hard drive and memory unit

so the Xbox is not as good value as you make it out to be as you need to spec it up to match the ps3 specs and even then the hard drive is 40gb short and any larger one will be stupidly expensive.

Also give it a few months any wou will more than likely find similar packs once the ps3 is a bit less scarce, there are more games for it and when it's running up to christmas.

Plus, just like the xbox will eventually, the price of it will go down.

I am looking at this neutrally as I had a 360, and when it was working it was a good machine with some very good games, the problem was it kept on crashing even after microsoft replaced the machine so I got rid of it in the end.
