switching from variable to fixed servicing

Featured Replies

Right I am currently on variable servicing at 51k I want to change to fixed if I change the oil now for a fixed type how do I reset the service light to come back on at 60k it is not on a the moment

Also does anyone a have a recommendation for a good quality fixed service oil

Been thinking of making the move myself over to fixed, but still unsure.

You can do a dash service reset which is in your manual. This will give you 12 months or 10,000 miles of motoring before it appears. In your case it will appear in 51,000.

How far are you from your last variable service ?

I believe you can only reset the indicator if the vehicle is set to fixed already?

Nope.

Follow the instructions in the manual and the car reverts to fixed intervals.

Ahhh, my bad.

Hold in the mileage reset button, turn the ingnition on and start the car. Release the button and on the left dial turn the dial to the right.

As for oil, Id revert to a good fully synthetic oil, possibly 5w40, I have just used Mobil 1 0/40w which costs around £25 from Costco.

Can i ask why you are thinking of switching services styles ?

Not sure, but on a vRS I dont like the idea personally of a 20k service interval. Im going one beyond Skoda and using the best available to keep it running tip top.

I think the type of driving and the way i drive it needs the oil changing more regular

My last service was 41500K

You can only reset to fixed intervals when the compooter tells you its needs servicing, ie you cant reset it between services. Once you switch to fixed you cant go back to variable, but 10k intervals is more than enough anyway.

You dont need to start the engine to do a 'dash reset' just turning ignition on works, i've just done it...

What has the service reset light got to do with anything? I don't understand the hang up that seems to come up time and time again about fixed and variable servicing, like the "light" dictates when you do servicing..

If you feel like servicing or changing the oil, then change it, surely? If the light annoys you when it comes on, then reset it..

You can switch back and forwards as much as you like as long as the correct oil is used and the dash is programmed accordingly.

You can switch mid service, but it will need to be serviced at that point.

  • 3 weeks later...

I bought my vRS last August with 29,300 miles on it.

It was serviced in the previous April with around 29,000 miles on it (long story, car didn't do many miles inbetween!).

It is now sitting on just over 33K and I am being prompted to service.

I am a bit confused by the variable/fixed servicing malarky, can anyone advise what I appear to be on?

I don't believe the car needs a service at present as it has not covered many miles but was wondering if I can reset the indicator myself until it does get done.

If I reset it, can it be reset again (possibly VAG-COM?) when the service is done to bring things back into line?

This will be more than likely later this year when i am getting the timing belt and water pump done as it will be 4 years old.

Cheers peeps,

Steven.

Its 12 months or something like 10-12k whatever comes first?

From what you say, your car will be on fixed service intervals and is indicating that it needs an annual inspection which includes an oil change service. Once that is done, and provided LongLife oil is used, it can then be reset for variable service intervals. Resetting the indicator yourself without getting a service done will mean that the car no longer has a full service history.
