With my planned 40K self-service coming up I need to start thinking about the type of oil to use. Looking back over my last car's dealer service bills they used Magnatec oil at my 20K service, but some much more expensive (

I use Castrol GTD magnatec in my Fabia vRS, and can get 1 gallon (which is the same as the engnie) for 15 squid. If you know anyone who is a cash and carry member (ie costco and macro) have a look round there to see what they have and how much it is.

Isn't SLX also a Castrol oil?

I do have the ability to "source" a Makro card so will take a look there sometime too.

I guess as long as I look out for GTD magnatec that should be OK. Is there some kind of special grade I should look out for if I'm somewhere that isn't a GTD magnatec stockist?

Look in the manual (or on this website) for the VAG oil spec and any oil with this on the back would be suitable.

The oil I got was 5-30 or 5-40 as Costco don't sell the 0-30 version (if it is made at all), haven't had any problems over the last 4000 miles so it's ok by my book

OH and SLX is a castrol oil.

I found suprisingly that 1l of 0W30 oil from my Skoda Dealer was cheaper than Halfords

Originally it was just the SLXII that was most widely available and that met the spec for longlife servicing. However, I remember seeing somewhere that there were other oils that were now available that met the spec (IIRC one of the Shell Helix oils). This might bring the price down a bit.

Remember 40,000 miles is cambelt time.

ross i thought it was 60k on most of the vag engines but 40k on some of the earlyer disels.

But Skoda may well be different. We need clarification as the owners manuals are as clear as mud!

Probably best to get the cambelt changed, the money is well spent compaired to the money spent if it goes......

As for the Oil, I have a 1 litre bottle in my Garage that was bought from Skoda as it was cheaper than Halfords etc. It says on the bottle Esso Ultron, For high performance engines.... You gotta love it

Miller oils do an oil specifically for the PD engines (Not for extended service interval use) and is approved by VAG.
