Battery Query

Featured Replies

Hi all

Does anyone know the size (AmpHr) rating of the battery fitted to the 1.9 130 bhp Superb TDI's and the battery manufacturer?

Reason for asking such a dumb question: -

I got back from a trip to Glasgow and found the car battery was flat; dim interior lights; dash lights flickering etc.

I removed the battery cover disconnected the battery and put her on charge for a few hours. I noticed that the battery was 12v 75AmpHr but more alarming was the Rover MG sticker on it?

I bought the car at 11months old from MotorPoint Derby. When I visited to view the car after a wait of a week or two for them to actually receive the car, the battery was flat & they had to use a 'battery on a handcart' to assist the starting & just said somebody probably left the lights on. I thought no more about it and just asked that they charge the battery for collection.

The 2 possible scenarios for the battery change are: -

1) That MotorPoint changed the battery

2) That the person the car was leased to originally swapped out the battery prior to returning it. I feel thie is the more likely option.

Anyway if I could get confirmation of what should be fitted I can take the appropriate action:O

Thanks

Battery is a battery. The badge is purely there to keep the consumer happy. As long as it's rating is correct you have nothing to worry about.

The standing current drain on the VAG B5.5 and its clones (Superb) is unacceptably high. Apparently it's higher still when the car is left unlocked. This explains why, when I was shopping for my Superb, so many had flat batteries or previous evidence of flat batteries as used Superbs don't exactly fly off the forecourts. The one I eventually purchased had come back to the dealer on a low loader on one occaision due to this problem.

Looking at the options code list for my PD130, the specified battery (Option code J1D) is for a 72 Ahr battery 380A cold cranking current. Mine has a Varta fitted (original - terminal blue paint seals unbroken) but it might not achieve its full life due to being left flat.

This aspect of the electrical system is a poor show and could also give problems if, say, you left the car unlocked in secure storage for a while, as I have to do sometimes. The power socket in the boot is an easy way to connect the charger as it's live all the time....

Thanks for the info, that at least shows that the battery on my car is of the correct AmpHr rating. I will percervere and charge the battery some more before sticking my motorcycle's Optimate on it to tell me the state of it. I'll also take some voltage readings to build up a picture of it's condition.

Just a thought - has anyone used these solar trickle charge units?

If so, are they any good?

I would generally agree with you Andy, I was a bit disappointed to find a non-standard battery fitted as I would have liked to make a warranty claim if the battery was defective at less than 2 years old. I also wanted to know if the battery fitted was up to the job - power wise.

Thanks
