Nail in tyre

Featured Replies

Does anyone know whether I can get a tyre fixed which has a nail in it?

Still got around 5mm or so of tread left and I do't really want to buy one new tyre.

Is it ok to put on one new tyre at the rear?

TIA.

Adrian.

Adrian,

Depends on a few factors.

Where the nail is. If its in a sidewall, most places will not repair it.

If its a High Performance tyre (Clearly it is) a Lot of places will not repair, but some will, usually the independants ;)

If you go to Kwik-Fit et al, i guarantee they'll do the old sharp intake of breath & No Chance Guv routine...

Try a local independant and use it as the spare ;)

It's in the centre but I was thinking of ditching it and putting the other rear on the spare and getting a new pair.

That would mean though that I have an unused 205/50/17.

A colleague of mine had the same thing last year and had it fixed but it still kept on leaking some eventually had to change it.

What a pain in the a**e!

Got a puncture in one of my old conti's. Quiet a large nail, local independant fixed it for me, and this tyre went back on and did 15 laps of the ring. No probs with air leakage if they do it right.

If the hole is a clean one rather than a split the tyre should be readily repairable with the standard mushroom plug tyre repairers use. One of my sons was unlucky enough last year to have a second nail puncture very close to a previous one on a nearly new tyre. As the repair would have resulted in the heads of the repair plugs overlapping, the tyre had to be scrapped.

Leave the nail in the tyre so that the repairer can see where the leak is, Adrian, and put the repaired tyre back on the car unless warned otherwise by the repairer since the tyres on that axle will be evenly worn.

I had a nail in a almost new tyre a few months ago. I took it to Kwik fit who told me it couldnt be fixed and I needed a new tyre at a cost of
