Towbar - Octy Estate - Advice please

Featured Replies

Want to get a towbar fitted to our Octy II L+K Estate. Contacted dealer, price is

A colleague of mine has a witter detachable tow bar fitted by an independant, he doesn't report any major problems with the parking sensors and the bulb failure system has to be taken into account when fitting. The electrics were done via one of the rear light fittings but I don't have any more information other than that.

The cut out was only in the black plastic on the rear bumper below the painted section, AFAIK they cut a rectangular hole about 10 inches wide by 4 high with a panel to fit when the bar is off. The black pastic bumper section can be purchased from Skoda for around

I have an octy estate with a witter fixed towbar (flange type). The hole through the bumper is only a couple of inches square.

The only problem is that the parking sensors do sometimes play up and detect the towball.

I have had one of these fitted:

Bosal Detach Towbar OCTAVIA II Hat & Est 05/2004- 033-494

Got it fitted at a place called Towequipe in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

There's about a 2 inch square hole cut in the underside of the bumper, which you don't see anyway.

If you want, I could take some pictures in daylight tomorrow.

Not had any problems with my rear parking sensors either.

If you have factory fit PDC you can change the coding to tell it that you have a tow bar fitted.

My Octy II has a cutout in the bumper from the factory - have you had a look underneath to check yours?

Timay, if you could post a pic of the Bosal towbar, that would be great. Sounds ideal.

Its not an estate but should be quite similar. Genuine Skoda towbar with aftermarket relay. Fitted myself.

What towbar?

Now you see it!

Have a fixed Whitter on mine, needs a small cut in the bumper though.

Here's a couple of pics, they were only quick & I actually missed the one you wanted of the cutout underneath. I'll try and get that one for you tomorrow though.

Thanks for all the pictures, good to see what the different options actually look like

I contacted Bosal today and found their local fitter was the place I'd got the original quotes from - which hadn't included a Bosal bar!

Anyway, I rang back and had a good chat with one of the actual fitters, and he explained that the Westfalia detachable bar they normally fit only involves a cut out similar to the Bosal one, i.e. on the underside of the bumper. So I have decided to go with that -

The Witter fixed needs a 40mm hole cut in the matt black section of the bumper. The Witter detatchable needs a 150mm by 80mm (IIRC) cut, in the same area, with 2 smaller holes either side, presumably to hold a cover plate.

There are 2 Witter harnesses, the standard universal splice in type, at about

I had a towbar fitted at home by PCT and was quite impressed with the fitting, the cut out in the bumper is hardly noticeable! (unless you lie on your back and look up underneath the vehicle-even then it is still quite unobtrusive) However I fitted an aftermarket "bump plate" to the towbar and the reversing sensors went ballistic, constant warning when reverse is engaged. I have since fitted a 2" drop plate (too high nose)and and the reversing sensors now work correctly. I'm not sure whether my reversing sensors are particularly sensitive, any comments from anyone else who have noticed over senstive sensors?

I have now had my Westfalia detachable bar fitted, Hedleys did an excellent job in 2 hours and it is completely invisible when removed as the orignal Skoda job. Cost
