What flywheel are you using fella? (And don't just say a steel single mass one! )

Progress coming on nicely!

Hiya chief - I'm using a matching Helix setup - Steel SMF, organic clutch (no artificial flavours, colours or additives!!) and uprated pressure plate. Rated above anything I could get out of the engine without risking blowing it up.

Sarah has a lot to do with it....

Hope to glue together the shimmed gearbox tonite with a very thin layer of grey VHT silicone, and put in a few bolts just for extra security... :D

Gearbox now back in...Still have to connect driveshafts, refit subframe, starter, battery, airbox, wheelarch liner, wheel, bleed the clutch and fill up the gearbox oil... This better be worth it.....

it's all shiny!!!

nice work bas!

It's going to be a BASIL Vs MONGREL peloquin fitting race!

ahem, Peloquin shimmed and in the box. Gearbox fitted in the car, just the little things left

Of course no guarantee that it'll all work, but that's what makes this exciting....:D

If its not to late bleed the clutch out before you refit everything, makes it a lot easier to get onto the bleed nipple.

Thanks for the pointer m8 - anything that makes it easier to get to a nipple is a good thing...

all done! 5-hour marathon session last night, with SWMBO passing me tools and bolts- just connected the battery 5 mins ago.....

Now to testdrive the new install - REALLY hope that all will be ok - exhausted tbh.......

Cheers:D

Bas

well how did the test drive go?? :D

  • Author

testdrive went well m8 - clutch pedal feels like OEM - no whining from the gearbox, clutch engages smoothly, all well. Feeling somewhat relieved tbh...

soundwise - it's not a clatter - hope to post a .wav of it later. Running without the underneath sound insulation so as to inspect for any oil leaks.

Cautiously - seems to be looking good...

Top marks for going down the route of fitting them yourself.

There's a great deal of satisfaction when you do something for the first time & all is well!!

Having said that, I don't think I'll tackle fitting my uprated clutch & SMF though!! :D

Good to hear its all on well

nice work mate glad its payed off (well so far anyway:D)

First real trip of only 25km - running well. Taking it easy, but the car seems much more responsive and awake. Helix clutch is very smooth and sweet, barely any difference in effort compared to the OEM. Must be the oil change, but the gearchange is smoother too...

Definite continous noise only heard when idling in neutral with clutch out - sounds a little "industrial" like a derv truck idling, not at all bad (!). I've heard that it gets louder after 100 miles, so will have to wait until I have the clutch run in and the underside noise insulation put back before I can really comment. Even tho' I marked the bolts underneath the wheel hubs, car needs a wheel alignment badly..

Thinking about the fit - I can see why it costs a fair bit to have this package professionally fitted, it took me about 3 weeks working during all my spare time to get it together.

I'd like to thank Peter and Mark at Forge Motorsport and the one and only Awesome Sarah for arranging sending the parts halfway around the world. You don't know how lucky you guys are to have resource people like them around!

The one who made a huge difference is SWMBO (last nite was lovely baby!). We both had fun and worked for 4-5 hours nonstop!

I truly appreciate the kind words and support of all my mates on Brisk. And Ross - a special thank you mate! - couldn't have done it without your professional advice and guidance!

Cheers

Bas

well done Basil , whats the diff feel like ?

i heard that the warmer the engine/gearbox gets on a drive the noisier the gear clatter will be on idle

  • Author

I'm driving like a granny atm - need a wheel alignment, can't fully comment on the diff, but notice that going round corners seems more 'natural'.

The thinner the oil, the noisier it will be - can use thicker oil to quieten apparently, I managed to find 80W/90 synthetic stuff.

big love comin back atcha Bas me old mate .

Well done ......................

Hi Bas

I have been reading and awaiting the day you said it is all done!!!!!

Well done mate , am glad you got it sorted.

You know it is a bigger job than what you think? So I know just how impressive this is for you to do

Take it easy and bed in the clutch , then give it hell and let us know what you think.

Take care

Sarah

Does Haynes cover a gearbox strip down and rebuild, I didnt think it did.

Nope ;)

My sarcasm was obviously not conveyed by my first post :(

Anyone know how long the organic clutch takes to properly bed-in? I'm going really easy for the moment, but cannot wait to give it some beans!!!!

Ta

Bas

HI Baz IIRC it is 500miles

Thanks Sarah - I just love the new clutch - smoother than the OEM, fine in stop and go traffic, feels great! Oh and the noise that everyone seems to think is really bad? IF you are sitting in idle with the clutch out sounds a bit like a small diesel van idling - merely a bit industrial, constant clatter, not at all bad. And the way I drive is clutch in when starting to be kind to the drivetrain, only the final seconds at the end of a trip can I even hear the SMF noise. Glad I went with it and a matched Helix kit!

Can't wait to give it some beans!

Cheers

Bas

Hi Bas

I must admit , I have always said that if you modify a car quite a bit to the point of needing an uprated clutch then you are going to loose a bit of the luxury somewhere , but I think a few people have said that the vibration is bad , but thatnks to you Baz you have shown us all that it is not too bad

Thank you for that , anyone else with the enquiry on this clutch set up I will put them this way

Sarah

Bas - unplug your MAP sensor to give it the same bedding in as mine (although mine was not a forced limp mode - it gave the clutch the best bedding in time - 1000 miles odd of limp mode  )
