Thinking of buying vrs - advice please

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First off, is there anything specific to look at on these cars? I'm thinking of something around 3 years old.

What are servicing costs like?

Do you boys all get 50mpg like the marketing blurb claims?

What are the experiences with chipping? Who does the best chip and what sort of power does it produce? And does reliability suffer......?

Finally, do you think the first generation vrs values will drop when the new one comes out? When DOES the new one come out?

Sorry for all the questions on my first ever post!

Cheers,

Rob

i think the new ones expected in 2008?

50mpg is very achievable, just depends on driving style.

best bet is to do a search. theres plenty of threads covering this in lots of depth

You need to be aware that the cam belt needs changing on the engine at 60K miles or 4 years, whichever comes soonest. Your 3-year-old might be getting close to this, which carries a

Id say buy one which has just had its cam belt changed then run it for 4 years and get rid of it so that the next person has the hassle of changing the belt next time.

Its a crying shame that timing chains are not used by more than just BMW then servicing costs over a 5 year period would be MUCH lower

1st off Welcome :wavey:

2nd - take each question in turn and search the site, as there are so manypossible answeres you will come to your own conclusion on chipping & prices.

3rd yes 50 mpg is possible with moderatly careful driving ( you dont have to drive like a granny) :) Rumour on the new vRS is late 2008 - Official announcement to come from Skoda CZ.

M25 - set cruise control at 65 it returns near 65 over a 70 mile run.

Fuel comp. recons over the last 3000 I've averaged 51.5 - I know from the amount of derv v miles covered it's nearer to 49. I also know from the sat-nav the speedo's a bit optomistic so I think that's what the difference is (the M25 was done as a trial just to see what a smaller right foot would mean)

It's one of the few cars I would replace with a younger version of the same car.

Hope this is of some help.

Pretty much echoing the views above. Good point from Bryan re the came belt, seats might be a bit grubby, check the rear carpets for dampness, get a good service history and watch out for abused examples.

many of your questions will be answered in the Fabia section.

 Buy one, you won't regret it:thumbup:

Just under 50 is the absolute maximum I've got out of a tank so far (in 2 months, 2000 miles), in a mix of town and motorway driving

Fuel comp. recons over the last 3000 I've averaged 51.5

how do you get it to retain the figure? Mine resets after every journey

i got rid of an 04 vrs 18 months ago since then i've had an octy 2 140 tdi elegance a mitsubishi fto and an r32 nissan skyline look up my profile and view my car history on one of my threads and see what i am comparing a furby to, the only other thing i will say is the vrs furby is better than any car i have ever owned or driven as an all rounder and i have regretted getting rid of it ever since, the hole will soon be filled with a vrs se.:D

Many thanks for the advice guys.

My current situation is that my daily driver USED to be an e34 M5 (the 3.8 straight six one).

However, a change in circumstances (i.e. money - or lack of!) means this car is now too expensive to run all the time.

I want to keep hold of the M5, but need something sensible and cheap to run to use for my business mileage. I want something which I can also have a little fun in, so the vrs seems to fit the bill.

Thanks once again,

Rob

when you "scroll" down to average mpg, press the reset button under the stalk lightly. it should move from mode 1 "current" to mode 2 "total"
