I decided to remove the lock from the drivers door of my Octavia recently so I purchased a kit from VW. The kit included a dummy barrel, metal disc to cover an internal component (for security reasons) and a new cap for the handle. Fitting took no more than 20 minutes but would have been quicker if the instructions were Octavia specific.

This is the before pic, not all that ground breaking I admit but never mind!

The problem I had was removing the lock. The procedure mentioned in the instructions was to loosen, but not remove the T20 screw numbered '1' in the photo below. To remove the lock on the Octavia you need to loosen (but not remove) number 1, pull the handle out and hold it whilst loosening (but not removing) number 2. Once you have done that, let the handle back in and put the key into the lock. Turn the key clockwise and gently pull, the lock will pop out.

I am not going to go into the details of security for obvious reasons. Fitting the new cap is simply a case of clipping it onto the new 'dummy' lock barrel and then reversing the procedure for removing the original.

IIRC Nissan Micras have a dummy cover over their locks as standard on the hands free models. If your battery goes flat, you just pull the cover off and use the key. Simple, cheap and effective. Keeps poo out of the lock barrel too I imagine.

New Passat has a similar set up, and there is a conventional key hidden inside the fob for use in the hidden conventional lock.

I'd like to do this to my car, as some ?@$% had a go at getting in (see pic). The key still works so I dont need a new lock, just a cover.

Not as far as I am aware. My friends 03 plate has the boot lock, as does my 52 plate. Perhaps it was deleted later on?

Hmmm.:confused: It looks like they must have started to blank the boot lock towards the end of the life of the Mk1 then, which sort of stops me from blanking the door lock. If that's my only way in after the fob fails, I best not seal it off.

Unless... can I buy a blanking kit, put the plastic bit over the lock to make it look as though it's been de-locked and remove the cover if needed?

I wondered about that, I think you will struggle though as the lock sits level with the existing cap so any cover over that would stand proud. The cap I used would certainly not be any good as it clips into the fake lock barrel before fitting, then the whole lot is fitted in one go. If you come up with any ideas I would be interested to see them though
