Xenons

Featured Replies

What does the "maximum legal limit" setting refer to for xenon headlights. Is it a setting on the beam setter that you would use for an MOT or does it refer to a computer setting. Im asking as I'm not happy with the xenons on my Fabia. Had it back to the dealers and they say they are set ok, but they only seem to shine 20 feet in front of the car, then there is just blackness, no graduation of light, no good for driving around in the dark with just dipped beam.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I've tried the search already and I'm still non the wiser.

The "max legal limit" setting is to the beam setter as used for MOT requirements.

The only way to adjust is to plug in VAG-Com, select the head light adjustment menu then adjust the head lamps manually to the legal limit. The vital part of this procedure is to "set" via VAG-Com, otherwise they willl revert back to the last setting.

What sort of range do yours have?

there have been a few threads on here about dealers saying the xenons are adjusted correctly when they obviously aren't , IIRC owners have asked the dealers to adjust to the maximum legal setting

has your car been lowerd

a freind of mine had this problem when he lowerd his vrs because of a sencer on the rear of the car that detects weight and auto adjusts the head lights.

so as jon TDI said it can only be set with VAG-COM

The correct procedure is described on the Ross-Tech website. The crucial bit is that after the level has been manually set the system has to be told that the current setting is to be kept. If the dealer skips this part of the procedure (i.e. presses Cancel instead of switching to the next function group) nothing changes and the headlights revert to their previous setting.

Properly set up, my Xenons have a range of well over 150 yards.

Not not lowered, only had her a week. 150 yards sounds more like what I was expecting. I'll print that info off from ross tech and take it with me if I go to the dealers again.

Thanks.

As far as I am aware, the problem is that the light beam tester thingy-majigy (forgot the name) is set up for normal headlights. This has four lines:

The very top line is red and shows the highest setting possible legally

The two line underneath are black and are where the headlights are normally set at.

The very bottom line si red and shows the lowest setting possible legally.

When I got my xenon's realigned they were set to just under the top red line. This makes them shine quite far ahead and makes a HUGE difference to when they were set inbetween the two black lines.

Hope that helps.

They are set too low by the factory. The dealer has these settings. My dealer told me they were set fine. I told them they were not and after a discussion on here about setting them to the legal limit, they did so and they are now fine!! Well not fine...Brilliant!! Take the car in and ask them to make this adjustment

They are not set by the factory as the car comes with it's suspension chocked for transport. IIRC Ross said that they need to be set during PDI by the dealer.

Youre right but they set them using a light box which is calibrated to normal bulbs. The beam angle comes out lower because there is a cut off on Xenons that you dont get with normal bulbs. They still need telling to set them at the legal limit

i set mine manually without the use of VAGCOM , (can't do it anyway as i've only got the freeware version) they have stayed adjusted to my setting , from what i remember reading on here , the reason why you have to use VAGCOM is to set the new setting as the zero position for the load adjuster on the back axle or it could adjust the headlamps off the end of the adjuster under extreme conditions

thats how i understand it anyway

Same same! Finally got them raised to max legal limit by dealer but only after I was told that I should just use main beam instead if I wasn't happy. Yep - that would have made me real popular!! Great now.

I had mine set correctly by the dealer and to be honest, main beam

is now a joke.

Vag Com cable (USB) -

Prior to my dealer sorting them out, I had a go at adjusting them with VAG-Com by a member. Waste of time, couldnt get a reference point to adjust them properly. As for doing it without VAG-COM. They will not automatically adjust for weight in the back and will blind oncoming vehicles. IMO dont do it. Get the dealer to set them

Thanks for all your replies, most helpful. Shall have to take the car back and get them to have another go.
