Octy vRS engines

Featured Replies

Why are they quite noisey on tick over?? I know someone has suggested it is to do with some pump or other, surely this cannot just be it. Mine had it's coil packs replaced as I was wondering whether it was them (as per FAQ) I even got a dealer to crank up another vRS and it sounded the same. Just wondered if anyone had any more feedback, as it's just for my curiosity.

Hydraulic tappets, iirc

And EGR valve, and injectors

Climate control compressor makes quiet a noise, just to see try turning off the climate control before starting the engine. Makes quiet a difference.

And EGR valve

Is that the charcoal filter thingie? What exactly does that do?

There is some more info in this thread.

mines quite noisey but not a bad as the Renault so to me its actually pretty quiet... if that makes sense at all !?

i was told theres a pump or something that speeds up and slows down when the car is idling, thats the only thing i can hear when the cars ticking over. Other than that the only other thing i hear is the valves when you first start the car, being 20v instead of 16v it has a slightly different sound.

Not to be confused with noises from a broken gearbox.....

Just done a search for 'ticking' and found this old thread...

Was going to ask about the noise mine makes at idle (02 Oct RS, 23k) - I would describe it by saying it sounds like tappet noise but slightly less metallic. Noise is from the top of the motor. Is this normal then? Is it injector noise and am I actually hearing it from the plenum chamber?

Cheers.

PS may get to listen to a '53 Golf Gti early next week for comparison.

While we're on the subject of strange noise diagnosis hows about this one..

Every time I open the door to my car after unlocking it I get a strange sort of droning sound for about 1 second. Sounds like some sort of pump priming to me. Any other brighter ideas?

Yep, I get that one... No idea what it is though.

fuel pump primeing... always take the batt off before working on the fuel system.. as it like to pump fuel around for the hell of it.:P

Strange noises explained here

The whirring noise when you first open the driver's door is -as Paul (ffelan) said - the fuel pump priming. I don't understand why it's programmed to do it then; before the average car was equipped with more computing power than the Apollo moon landers, the fuel pump was simply wired to come on with the ignition, and that seemed to work OK.

What about the fan that runs on start up (not every time) and stops after about 1 minute?

the pump that runs for a minute or so on cold start is the secondary air pump, this pumps air into the exhaust to promote a secong burn of the exhaust gas to rapidly heat the cat.

It's an emissions thing like the fuel pump priming, this is to produce max pressure in the system prior to starting to ensure quick starting.

EU ratings are to blame for all these strange noises!!!
