Dealer service costs are high. Independents appear to give better value for money.

True on face value, But then there are a lot of service actions that pop on the system when a car comes into the dealer network for a service that wouldn't be actioned at an independant. Some of them won't warrant a recall as they aren't a safety issue but will help with some maybe unobvious running issues etc.

I wish I did!

Labour 168 + VAT

Misc bits (oil filter pollen filter etc) 29.75 +vat

'fuel system treatment' 15 +vat

engine oil 46+vat

consumables, environmental fee15.20 +vat

168+29.75+15+46+15.20 = 273.95

273.95 x 1.175 for VAT =

You dont have a 20k and an annual inspection.

At 20k the annual isn't needed as the 20k is an inspection sercive.

What "service actions"?

Recalls?

Youve lost me Ross!!

Things like engine ECU updates and quality repairs.

Not all specific to Skoda but a lot of VW cars miss out on things like replacement door seals, resealing of the pollen filter housings etc on cars all in or out of warranty but that are still done FOC as they flag up on the VAG system when cars are brought into the dealer network.

There are loads of engine ECU updates for various engines that we do when the dealer diagnostic equipment is connected. These rectify various things with the running of the car and some have said an improvement in economy on the 1.6 FSI for example.

Is it a rip off -- yes

can you pick and choose -- yes, but most of us are cautious during the guarantee period.

I paid similar prices for a 1.4 Tdi and now do almost everything myself. What really upset me was the dishonesty about problems and solutions (one dealer only - the one who sold me the car). It is clear that there are good and conscientious dealers out there and good people working for them. The others do a great deal of harm to them as well as the marque. I suspect that this is not confined to Skoda. Many thanks for those who are willing to spend time and effort helping on this site whilst working "in the field". Much appreciated.

Rip off?

Ok, look at a recent thread about a members turbo failure and see where SUK won't pay for the warranty work. The car was last serviced by a third party.

You will also notice in the thread where another members car had exactly the same issue but it was serviced at the dealer. SUK covered the new turbo and inter cooler.

Suddenly the

Yes, that does sound like a rip-off.

Mine is due it's first 10K service soon and there is now way I'm paying anywhere near that!

Its true. OK its not strictly correct but if you looking for a little flexibility from your dealer having bought your car from a dealer and having it serviced at the dealer carries a lot of weight IMHO. Buying it from a car supermarket or importer, getting a third party to service it and just bringing it back for warranty issues although is perfectly within your rights isn;t always best policy.

Kinda vicious circle as well as dealer charges are now higher as they need to make more money out of less work as service intervals have got longer and competition is a lot tighter.

I thought they were not allowed to refuse warranty work if the car was serviced in accordance with the manufacturers spec and parts. Hence using an independent garage

If the car is standard they aren't allowed to refuse true if its down to a defective part.

Just had mine given 20k Service.

Got quotes from 3 dealers first and ranged from

These 'motorflush' & 'fuel system treatments' are a con. It ain't part of the skoda service. Its an added xtra to make money off the services carried out. The dealer will buy from a 3rd party, add a considerable amount on to what they pay for them and also charge u labour!!
