TomTom & Postcodes

Featured Replies

Howdy all,

I hope this info will be useful to all you TomTom owning sat navvers out there and I'm not posting old news - so here we go...

http://www.digitools.co.uk

On this site you can find the Holy Grail of TomTom addons - Postcodes :D

I for one find it a little tedious to type in the place then street name of where you want to navigate to and have to wait ages for TomTom to bring up the list of possibles it's found. With the little program on the above website you only have to type a few characters and can then show the address on the TomTom map or navigate straight to it using your current location

Apologies if this info is already widely known - I just couldn't keep it to myself as it really enhances the usefulness of what is already a brilliant program.

Cheers

As a side note, I always thought my sat nav (see review section) couldn't do postcode entry (as the manual states), but that turns out not true. Much easier to use now! Shame I have to fork out another

Mark, you're a star !

That's the one option missing from Navigator, direct postcode entry.

Can't wait to give this a try. :)

Thanks Geoff, it's a doddle to use but a little mad installing on some PDA's - gimme a shout if it all goes Pete Tong :)

If this works I will love you forever Mark! (in a platonic way of course)

In a plutonic way of course

Pluto was the Roman god of the underworld... so a very interesting type of love indeed

Maybe you mean platonic? :P

I actually ment in a mickey mouse's dog sort of way! :D

(yes I meant platonic)

i've just ordered a TomTom bluetooth kit thru work and it comes with TomTom 3 - should arrive on Monday/Tuesday so i'll let you all know what i think of the improvements

Mark,

tried the postcode software, seems pretty good. Picked up the route for a bit of a journey i'm doing at the weekend no probs ;)

It seems to calculate the routes faster too, which is nice :)

It works very well, mark. Thanks for the link!

See my post in 'toys' forum, TomTom version 3 was announced yesterday at CeBit with UK postcode support, you may be entitled to a free upgrade. FWIW, I'm using the Postcodes.exe programe from Niels too, it rocks :-)

Dave.

I won't be buying TomTom3 unless i go for the Bluetooth GPS at some point.

Navigator2 works just fine for me right now ;)

Does TomTom work on a pc?

Given of course a moving GPS input to said PC.

Looking for a suitable bit of software, but with post code search, tom tom kind of takes the edge of autoroute (I already have autoroute).

Thoughts?

Colin,

TomTom is PocketPC only.

Go get yourself an IPaq or something :D

Geoff,

Need to source a GPS device thats compatible for both ipaq and pc, the car pc will be victorious...just have to sort the HU and amp and speakers to make the hours of mp3'ing worth while.

Colin,

If you get a bluetooth gps receiver, you will be able to use it on PC and Pocket PC. The reason I suggest a Bluetooth one is the proprietory connectors on the hard wired Pocket PC stuff are incompatable with any of the connectors on the back of a PC.

I'm getting my TomTom Bluetooth kit on Mon/Tuesday so I'll report back on its ease of use/functionality and also let you have a look at it when we meet up in 5 weeks time :D

Cheers

Have just install ukpostcode, and at last TomTom is complete!! :):)

Thanks for the link

Have just install ukpostcode' date=' and at last TomTom is complete!! :):)

Thanks for the link [/quote']

Ah but TomTom 3 will not have full postcode search and this will be compatible (according to TomTom)

OK, here is my very brief assessment of TomTom3.

New icons, half arsed postcode support, bigger map (101MB versus 92MB on TomTom2), itinerary support so you can plan a route from A to B via C, D and E if you want.

It's all very much the same just seems a little crisper in execution - working out routes "seems" quicker.

I also got the TomTom Bluetooth GPS receiver and that's where it all starts to go horribly wrong :(

First thing you notice is the number of times the two devices (iPAQ & GPS) stop communicating - you have to shut down TomTom and restart it to get them chatting away again - very annoying and not to be recommended at 80mph on a busy motorway.

The second thing is... oh, hang on, there is no bloody second thing, or third, fourth or fifth because the little blue light that is supposed to be blinking away on the GPS receiver is now a nice steady RED colour and the GPS is no longer working at all!!!! I had a look around the 'Net to see if anyone else was having problems, lo and behold, quite a few are. The solution is to leave the thing disconnected from the power for 5 hours so the battery drains and then power it solidly for 2 hours - not much bloody use as a GPS device for the next 7 hours by the look of things :( I followed these instructions all to no avail. After being off power for a while, the red light goes out, attach power and the red light reappears - cue doing this for the last couple of days. I am going to send it back on Monday and get a wired GPS receiver as I have used one quite successfully for the last 6 months without problem.

I would say that I could have just been very unlucky and anyone else who gets a TomTom Bluetooth GPS receiver may not see any of these problems - I've just been put off though :( :( :(

Cheers

Mark, sorry to hear about the Bluetooth GPS probs, but somehow i expected it.

I was tempted to go down the same route myself, but after your review i'll stick with what i have for now ;)

Hi Guys.

I have had TomTom2 and bluetooth GPS for about 6 months and it works fine. Did you "pair" your GPS and iPaq? I had the same problem till I did this.

The red light is signifying that the battery needs charging on the GPS. You can also use the GPS while it is charging.

The other good thing about the bluetooth GPS is that it also links to TomTom City maps on my Nokia 6600 phone!

Ross.

Ross,

Paired up fine and dandy - just doesn't hold the BT connection once out on the road.

Red LED is the only LED - no green one, no blue one and red one is on the left not on the right where i was fairly sure it had been earlier.

Ta for your input tho :)
