Hill Hold on vRS

Featured Replies

Does it exist on the 2007MY models?

The manual states it does, but the car always rolls back on a fairly steep hill near where I live...

Never tried it, but on M-B with "Hold Assist" you need to come to a complete halt, then push on brake pedal harder (another 1-2 inches) and then HOLD would appear on the OBC (Maxidot thing)

It's fitted to the latest L&K and it's available on the Scout but I don't think it's fitted on any other UK model.

Just checked the May 2007 release brochure, and as dstev2000 says only on L&K and Scout.

Interestingly it is optional across the range in Denmark and New Zealand to name two.

Perhaps it can be optioned in VAG.COM  on 2007MY onwards (please let this be true ... I WANT MORE OPTIONS :D :D :D )

If you are worried about hills, you could always use the default manufacturer supplied supplementary rear-biased manually applied braking system ...

AKA the HAND-BRAKE :P

Hill starts with a handbrake? just sit on the clutch until it's time to pull away.......:P

I'm actually looking forward to trying this fangled hill start thingymobob out.

IIRC it holds onto the brakes for 2 seconds when starting off on an incline.

mmmm! ... what's that nice smell?

I thought it came with ESP? Not a bad thing to have, even with DSG. You just need to plan ahead a bit i.e. you're first at a junction on a steep hill in rush hour and you need to be out into the flow of traffic sharpish it takes 2 seconds for the hill hold to come off.

HillHold includes, but is additinal to, ESP (in vehicles where it may be specified as an option or is standard L&K and Scout in the UK)

"Basic" ESP includes ABS, ASR, MBA, HBA, TC and EDL on certain models, but doesn't include HillHold

It doesn't work like that - it will hold for a MAXIMUM of 2 secs

It designed to give you enough time to move from pedal to pedal whilst still at a standstill.

Once you press the throttle it disengages immediately.

Interesting, maybe I've not been pressing the gas peddle enough. When I first got the car I did try pressing the gas but didn't go anywhere for a second. I'll give it a try tomorrow - only had the car 3 and a bit weeks so still learning all this technology!

There's is probably a slight take-up delay with the DSG as with any auto (even though it is not just "any" auto!)

From Skoda June 2006 Brochure...

The Hill Hold Control System is an innovation that prevents

rolling back. You will especially appreciate this feature in

a busy urban environment where other cars tend to stop

right behind you. The smooth take-off with the Hill Hold

ensures that starting does not distract your attention, and

consequently helps you to keep an eye on the surrounding

traffic.

Fair enough, I'll give it some revs tomorrow and see what happens!

Hang on, Runboy you have a DSG - surely that can't let you roll backwards anyway?

It does roll backwards if you are on a smaller slope and hill hold has not engaged. Its not much - as soon as you take your foot off the brake the DSG will engage a second after. You could hold the car on a slope using the accelerator, but you will only shorten the life of the clutch in the DSG box.

I had a Golf GTI DSG (MY2005) and I'm sure it had sensors that would detect if you rolled backwards whilst in Drive and upped the "crawl" throttle.

This was the first gen DSG software, perhaps they have reprogrammed it since?

Perhaps it doesn't now have that facility to do that if you have HillHold?

Possibly, when you have stopped and your foot is on the brake, the clutch disengages. If you do a quick "off brake onto accelerator" move there will be a slight delay. If you release the brake slowly the clutch comes in and you can creep forward in traffic.

The manual says that you must not "ride the clutch" (you know what I mean) as this will overheat the friction plates and automatically disengage the clutch, presumably to roll back or the hill hold to kick in.

Not, it is not only software option - some hardware parts for hillhold car are different (like ESP electronic unit and something else, I dont remember. I saw it in ETKA)

I have hillhold on my vRS. I dont like this options. Firstly, on small hills car roll back as usual, only hills with grow more than 5% activate this system. And you never know - will roll car or will not when you release the brake.

Secondary - when it work, it hold the brake even when you push the accselerator and you need give more power for start with braking wheels. First and second time when I start with active hillhold system my engine shutting down because I give small power. :thumbdwn: I not recommended HillHold to anyone.

The same system installed on new Ford Mondeo and I already reading bad reviews of this in Car Magazines.

hmmm, doesn't sound that great.

At least with the M-B version (E-class) it is always on an auto, so no chance of stalling.

Also the M-B version differs in that it is manually applied - you tell the system when to activate and a little message appears so you know it is working

M-B version not just for HillHold either, you can take all feet off pedals at level traffic lights etc and it wont creep - then again M-B have a stupid foot-operated parking brake, so it's a technological solution to the fact you can't as easily apply or release (via hand lever) the brake as a normal hand-brake.

Skoda version sounds a bit more "Russian Roulette" (no offense :o )

Yeah, 'cos Denmark's REALLY hilly???

Wasn't a test or geography/geology - more politics. What one country's importer sees fit to have as standard or offer as an option others don't even mention. Like heated seats on vRS?

Tried giving it a bit more welly when on hill hold this morning and it does release sooner, and being DSG no danger of stalling.

I have a DSG diesel, it will roll back slightly before it then creeps forward on hills. There is definetly a lag on pressing the acclerator before it takes off, more apparent when engine cold and not related to hills, so this I am sure is a combination of lag in the DSG box and the fact that unlike a manual or normal automatic it starts at low revs when the torque is low. A bit annoying as I have to pull out onto a blind bend at home ( you can hear the traffic before you see it ! ) and there is that hesitation for a second or so before I guess the turbo etc kicks in and off it goes. It does make it a bit difficult to drive off smoothly sometimes. Seems less of an issue when engine warmed up a bit.

Is it much different to the electronic handbrake that was on the Megane Scenic hirecar I had a few years back? IIRC, that came on automatically when you came to a halt, and released when you lifted the clutch with the car in gear.

It also had a little handle on the dash you could pull to activate the handbrake, although whether that was more than a placebo, I'm unsure... :D

They used to a Hill Holder system on Subaru's & I thought it was great. I don't know if they still have it or not.

If it's not too expensive I would recommend it.
