Can't comment on all the cars mentioned on your list, but my previous car was a 2.0 Focus ESP... Apart from the awful dealer attitude (find yourself a quality indy one to look after you) and normal wear type stuff, it was a good car. In fact I kinda miss it for its fun to drive feel and it actually felt quite solid.

If you buy one fit better headlight bulbs as the ones fitted aren't great, check the brakes as they don't seem to last long (that could of been my driving though:rolleyes: ) and make sure it gets serviced at its intervals (12,500 miles) as the engine feels ropey over the schedule!

Good spec as well...

Air Con, Traction, Heated front screen (miss that on icy days), decent ish audio.

What are they like for quality feel? I love the solid feel i get in the fabia, nice clunk when the door closes etc, is the focus a solid car or is it a bit tinny?

The Focii I've been in have always felt nice and solid.

If you pick carefully I don't think you'll go wrong with a ford focus

Octy?

What level of octy could i get for that money? what are they like? Thought of a golf but too expensive or very high mileage, octy has same chassis so is a good idea, cant believe didnt think of one doh!!!!

Any recommendations for them?

You could probably get a 3 year old 1.9TDI Ambiente with about 50-60k for that. Or a vRS of a similar age with about 70-80k on it... :D

Rob.

Erm, older Fabia vRS? :rubchin:

The other trolls suggestions are city/small family cars - well why not one of the above lots of power more prestige

'cos most of those suggested by you will be:

a) more expensive to insure, and

B) have more than 60k miles on them, and

c) probably be more than 6 years old (and thus not on a new-style reg).

These were all criteria, while power and prestige were not. :)

HTH,

Rob.

Yes I did omit that from my thoughts.

However the other thought here is that buying one of these will mean that he/she would be keeping the car longer than a smaller car so forgoes the added cost of buying & selling again & better the devil you know.

In addition to that the BMW engine are all cam chains not cam belts and therefore do not have to be changed unlike the costly expense of every other brand I suggested. So lower servicing costs.

Also why does it have to be under 60k? Thats a very low milage for a new reg car given that the oldest new reg pates came out 7 years ago. If he/she bought a 7 year old car with sub 60k on the clock then it will have been used mainly in the city for stop start driving so the engine will be much more worn than a high miler motorway car.

Dont be afraid of high milages they are not an issue on modern cars.

I'm not sure the Mondy fits into that category! Nor the VW come to think of it!

Chris

Why do you refer to other posters as trolls?

And a chain still needs replacing, eventually. What's the interval on a BMW engine? 120K? And how does the price of replacement compare with a more traditional belt?

If the OP has listed requirements, wouldn't it be easier just to stick to them?

Steve

Camchain might need changing at 200k IF it is getting loud. Cost is no different then that the belt.

I thought the trolls name was given to anyone who posts here - lots of posters use it when referring to me so I assumed that is what people call random people on forums.

Ah, I see. Like that is it? Well, a definition for you:

Troll: a troll is someone who intentionally posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages

You're often found to meet the above criteria, hence the use of the term.

come on guys.... back to topic

keep the car you have got.

when you sell it and buy an older car for less a month you will end up shelling out on repairs and end up spending 250 a month anyway.

The other option may be to refinance ? Move the loan out over a longer period with a different vender. You may be able to lower your APR and monthly payment as well.

Octy?

What about my Octy Vrs, 51 plate with around 46,500 miles and in stunning condition?

I had a focus 1.8TD Zetec (old style) it was a great car. I did 60k in it with very few probs, not the best seats but the fit and finish was good.

Brother in law had a 1.8 petrol and liked it but it had a bit of a drink problem relative to the power it produced.

Collegue at work picked up a 52 Golf GTTDI (130) 3Dr for

That's unlikely to be any cheaper to run than a Fabia.

The insurance and fuel costs will be higher , and there's a much bigger chance of unexpected repair bills

How old is your furby VRS.

I know one that was PXed for

I was thinking it would be at the lower end of his budget and the running costs may be higher than a newer Fabia VRS but still not excessive and with independant specialists are even cheaper.

Not trying to push mine but I was trying to show what he could get for his money and keeping in the Skoda family.
