Guess where I was this afternoon...?

Featured Replies

...at Awesome, getting a set of these beasties:

zerosixties.jpg

Even without them being bedded-in, I can tell how much better they are than OEM - I'd say they're nearly on a par with the brakes on my old Xantia (which were one of the few things I miss about it!)

Never having been to Awesome before, I'm pleased to say how nice it was that everyone I dealt with was so friendly, and after Sarah's tale of the lengths they went to to get hold of the rear pads for me, it's also nice that they didn't just say "Balls to it, we'll just fit normal ones - he'll never know!"

Although come to mention it, I only have their word that they didn't! :rubchin:

*Just kidding!*

So      at least from me - I'm sure I'll be back again! :)

PS: Just noticed - check out the good job I did on getting the hub badge and the writing on the tyrewall the right way up! Took me ages, that! Not. ;):D

If you don't mind how much did they cost??

Thanks

:)

I see they produce a fair amount of dust :P

Mmmm Toyos... Ahem, what make are the discs you have had fitted.

look a bit small , you need 312s

^^ For all the above:

@HC1001 & blackmagic, the discs are Zerosixties and I paid 104.22+VAT for the fronts and 84.57+VAT for the rears. I think that may be a little less than RRP, as I was having a load of other stuff done at the same time and did a bit of a deal!

@ncarring, I don't think they're that bad dust-wise, the wheels were minging from before they were put on... :o (Sorry again, Dave)

@ric04vrs, yeah yeah yeah  I did have a look if any were going on ebay, actually but having seen pictures of some on I'm not sure some 17"-ers might have been required as well - and that's WAY too far down the slippery slope at the mo! ;)

Forgot to mention: not only did I get new discs, but a full set of Mintex Extreme pads, too! I think Decron had a set put on a while back that he was pretty enthusiastic about, and I couldn't agree more. Sure, I'm comparing what I've got on now with a set of OEM brakes that were on their last legs, but after a quick blast down the backroads on the way into work, there was never any sense of "Ooh, I'd quite like to be able to slow down better!" Press harder on the pedal, slow down quicker - easy peasy!!! :D :D :D :D :D

i hate to play devil's advocate here (and they do look very nice by the way:D) but they aren't they fitted the wrong way round?? the grooves are supposed to go from the centre to the outer edge in the same direction of rotation(if that makes any sense)... so doesn't that one go on the right hand side??

A 312mm front set will fit nicely behind 16" wheels.

I thought that, but then saw an SL55 AMG with drilled discs going the 'wrong' way so I'm not sure it matters. I'm pretty certain Awesome wouldn't have fitted them the wrong way round, but I'll flag this post to Sarah, anyway...

It depends which way the internal vanes go, if they go the same way as the grooves on the disk then they are on the rong way round, as they are supposed to suck from round the hub then throw the air outwards to keep the disk cool, but i very much doubt Awsome would put them on the wrond way round, there not exactly a backstreet garage.

Problem is I've got 312mm TT brakes, they are great, but now I've got 17" wheels I'm tempted by Brembos having experienced their superior braking power/control.

I will resist it though, I just can't justify it & as I still have the 16" wheels I want to be able to swap them back on should I need to at some point :)

That's what I thought (on both counts!) :) Will see what I can see at lunchtime, all the same...

i would have thought they would fitted them right.... different disc manufacturers sometimes make them the oposite way... but normally they have the direction of rotation marked on them on the outer edge next to the miniumum thickness marking

Well, I had a look at the discs just now, and the vanes follow the direction of the grooves. However, thinking about it, this would be the same as on a compressor, whereas having the vanes pointing the other way (like TeflonTom described) would mean they would work like a blower (for all the mechanical engineers out there). Not sure which would be more efficient...

Hi

ZeroSixty`s are the ones that go the opposit way

This is how they are designed to be

They come with labels on as they are sided

Beautiful looking discs , "sexy" I call them

Was great to meet you by the way , always is good to meet fellow Briskodians here

Cracking looking discs and I must admit , we have had so many good responses from people with the Mintex Extreams that you cannot ignore them

Next ones for my car these

Give me a shout if you need any more help , I slept well friday night after the pad incident , but all went well , and your ok I would never say just fit standard and not tell him , I would ask your opinion first and make sure it was ok

Take care and let us know what you think when they are bedded in

Sarah

Nice discs.

I miss the braking power you got from a BX too, but then you did have a fully pumped hydraulic system behind them there.

Having had to go through a wildlife-induced energency stop on the way into work this morning, I'm pleased to say they are as powerful as they look (more down to the pads than the discs?) - no ABS or anything, but a nice, smooth rapid stop!

Now to see how they do on a long drive in the country... :D

Update:

Being a good citizen, I've 'fessed up to the insurance company about my new brakes, and they've CHARGED ME EXTRA! Why? It's not as though the car goes any faster! Part of me wishes I hadn't bothered, but then I don't want to give them an excuse not to pay out if I ever have to make a claim!

how much extra was it??

From an insurance company's point of view, you may be more likely to rely on the brakes and as a result carry more speed towards hazards and brake later so potentially more likely to have more accidents. FWIW, my replacement discs and pads didn't cost me any extra as they're just "consumables" (even though it now means I can carry more speed towards hazards and brake even later!)
