VRS - Cupra

Featured Replies

Hey all, just lifted my limeted vrs on friday there and omg, what a car.well pleased and im even more pleased to say that i have not noticed the dreaded stutter that everyone on here mentions.

Anyways, what are the main differences under the bonnet between the VRS fabia and the Ibiza Cupra. Different turbos? Different intercoolers? etc:confused:

One's got a diesel; the other's got a petrol?

I don't think they ever badged a diesel Ibiza as 'Cupra', only 'FR'?

well thats an obvious difference so i wouldnt of asked that:(

im talking about the 160bhp tdi cupra ibiza. the fr ibiza is only the 130bhp tdi unit

They did make the cupra with an oil burner. Its branded the cupra pd160.

The FR is shares the same engine as the vrs the pd130.

I think the main difference between the pd160 and the pd130 is the turbo, with on the cupra is connected to a fmic. There will also be software differences ect.

I think the cupra also gets one up on the vrs with its suspension set up. its wider track, uprated bushes, springs shockers give it a much sportier ride but loses alot of comfort.

The PD160 has a front mounted intercooler (Fabia has a smaller, side mount intercooler), different turbo and an different ECU map.

Other than that the engines are identical. :)

The Cupra however, also has bigger brakes (Brembos IIRC), a slightly bigger air intake, uprated bushes, a strut brace, much stiffer suspension etc etc... Most of which would be needed for your Fabia if you want to be able to put increased power on the road!

Hope that helps.

EDIT - Damn, beaten to it!

i was gona get the 160 intake and a green panel filter then a map. would have it sitting around the 170-180bhp mark i wreckon and best of all should take the torque reading from 229 - 290

Oh yeah! Hence the PD160 intake mod! :o

Sorry.

Not sure the Ibiza has a wider track though... ;)

no bother mate, maybe i was a bit crabbit

the cupra is wider than the standard ibiza. my brother has an Fr and in the sales booklet it says the cupra has a wider front and rear track. Dont know if it is true but will probably be down to a greater offset on the wheels or something.

Yes, but is that wider than the Fabias track though? I dont think so, but don't know for sure. The Ibiza looks narrow as standard.

Good point tom. now thinking about it what i said above is complete cobblers, D'oh. Mental note to self...... engage brain before typing.

CUPRA uses AP Racing calipers on 312mm discs.

Turbo is a garrett gt1749vb. Fabia ues a KKK unit based around a garrett gt1749va. vb has a bigger compressor and turbine I believe and can handle more boost as it has a stronger shaft.

Handling-wise you're talking a very accomplished car for FWD. Like others have said can spoil comfort but it's all relative.

Yes its due to the offset of the wheels to fit the 312mm AP four pot brakes behind.

surely it must be better to get cupra pd160 over vRS? though probably a lot more expensive

What do you mean by "better"?

They each have features which are better than the other - just depends what you're after. And if it's maximum speed, why are you buying a diesel anyway?

depends what your after

cupra will be quicker, handle better, more flashy

but hence that results in

less ride comfort, lose practicality of 5 doors, insurance group 16 and higher tax bracket I believe, less interior space, interior build quality not so good

have you ever sat in a Fabia then in an Ibiza? Ibiza interior seems to be made out of recycled Mcdonalds toys in comparison.

Yep! And I plumped for the vRS. The Ibiza Cupra was a nice car, but at

depends what your after

Yup. Though as a hot hatch the Cupra takes some beating IMHO

I looked at both FR and Cupra diesel Ibizas before going for the vRS. No real regrets - Ibiza had some nicer features, however the difference in price (depreciation included) and insurance grouping just wasn't worth it. The Cupra is really fun to drive, I imagine similar to a remapped vRS.
