VRS buyers guide?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just registered as I'm thinking of flogging my POS I've been runnning around in for the last few months soon. I'm lookng for something with five doors and a boot, with a bit of go but not too pricey to run, the Octavia VRS is looking pretty good!

I've been looking around the site trying to find out a bit of information on them, specs, options, faults etc. but I was just wondering if there was a buyers guide in here anywhere, or if anyone knows where I could find one?

If not, does anyone care to shed some light on what to look out for on them? I reckon I'd be looking to spend up to around

Hi there!

There are plenty of threads on this site in regards to Octy vrs specs.

If you just do a search at the top of the octavia page you should find plenty of info.

Hope you find what you are looking for:) .

I did do a search before posting, but it lept throwing up some fatal error or something. So far from looking around the forums I've learnt that they judder a bit around 2krpm, the windscreen wipers seize up but not really an awful lot else seems to pop up as a common fault! Is that because they really are that good!?

Common faults are coilpacks which sometimes give up the ghost, and cambelts need to be done religiously with waterpumps every 4 years/60k.

Other than that (coilpack issue) had no problems with mine, bar a slightly squeaky front end (possible dry ARB bushes)

Ah yes, I think I remember reading something about coilpacks on a Golf forum before.

Pretty good, solid cars other than that then?

Yep, they are pretty tough using a lot of VW parts. An excellent buy IMO.

A good reliable car if looked after. I would not let high mileage put you off :)

Go for it mate! with 6k you will get a good one i got mine 3 weeks ago payed just over 5k with fsh and with 50k on the clock i think they look great, good to drive handle well and go well!!!! Jabba remap is in the pipe line boy!!! i cant imagine what it will go like then!!!!! I just had cambelt and waterpump done on mine, to be on the safe side so bear that in mind when looking.

I was like OMG when the remap was done. Can you believe I even noticed it when pulling away for the first time after it was done? Just feels like a massive weight has been lifted from it.

Dealer price also seems to be

Cool. I'd be tempted to get a remap, I do miss having a car with a bit of poke!

So the service intervals a quite long on these too aren't they?

I've set a figure of

Well, I choose to keep mine on fixed servicing and use a fully synthetic oil (Mobil 1) to keep it running in tip top order in its fettled state.

Right, I've found one at a Seat dealer near me, 54 reg, 33,000 miles for

Well, I went, and I drove. Wasn't particulalrly impressed with the car itself, bit tatty for it's age, but I think I am going to go for one once I've sold my car/found a good vRS at a dealer.

The guys in the garage didn't really seem to know much about it (they didn't have much of a clue about anything realy). I was quite suprised when I drove it how noisey the turbo was, sounded like Darth Vader was camped out under the bonnet!

I've read some other people on the forums saying they don't here their wastegate etc when driving, you could in this, with window's up or down and with the A/C blwing hard. I also noticed a Jetex sticker in the back of it, could a replacement filter account for the extra noise, or is likely that it's had a filter and a remap?

The car started to come on boost around 2k and felt like it had a touch of torque steer as the boost built, does that sound normal for a standard car? It suprised me a little as It felt a little bit more of a handfull under acceleration than my old ITR did with its LSD.

One thing I noticed was a little strange, the headlights were always on, is that normal ala Volvo?

Overall I was impressed with the car, nice and roomy, huuuuuge boot, nice interior, felt quite nice and stiffly sprung but not too much, if you catch my drift. Looking forward to making the change now!

Dan, as I see you're in Basingstoke, we're having a meet early July between Kingsclere and Newbury. You'd be more than welcome to come along and question those there :)

When I first bought mine I couldnt here the tssssshh unless the window was wound down, but since my remap I hear it constantly, although its not intrusive. Boost should come in at around 1800 I believe, and from a standing start I found that it does suffer from torque steer through first and second, a very different beast to the ITR :) . And no, the headlights should not be on all the time.

In all honesty it sounds like the one you drove may have a few 'issues', find a good one and you will be happy :)

I did see that, thanks. I will probably try and pop out.

MisterGT, I think it sounds as though this car may have been remapped then, I did question the dealer but he said they were all that noisey.

In second gear accelerating from around 3,000rpm should really push you back and even break traction, the front end lifts nicely!

Youre probably best by the sounds of things taking a look at a few more.

Yeah, I might put my Fiesta in for it's MOT and get it sorted so I can flog it sooner rather than later. Not sure really, I think it's got a month or so to before it's due. Then I can't start my search properly...

one i noticed when i was looking at the mk1 vrs's is look under the front bumper, i found most had been whacked and scraped!!!

  • Author

Do you mean the underside of the bumer was scuffed, or do you mean behind the bumper you could see signs of crash damge?

Look under the front spoiler for damage, most will suffer from it, even with normal

driving :)

Ah, just as I suspected, ta!

So, who, wants to buy my superb Fiesta Zetec-S-****-mobile-powerhouse, form an ordelry queue.....:tongue2:
