vRS mooing solution?

Featured Replies

But the firstset of genuine pads and discs didn't do it :confused:

And they weren't the revised chamfered ones either

The discs would be from different casting batches, so the composition and/or crystalisation of the metal structure could be different.

Those, in turn, could affect the friction co-efficient of the pads on the discs, which is a normal cause of brake noise.

I tightened up the handbrake adjustment nut a bit last week when I was having handbrake problems and it made the mooing a lot worse  it was even mooing a little in reverse when the brakes weren't applied. I managed to scare a whole forecourt full of people yesterday when reversing at the petrol station  Slackened off the nut a bit now (so the lever ratchets up about 5 clicks) which seems to have helped a bit.

So Bodge would you recommend changing the rear calipers? I have got to do my rear discs and pads before xmas and am going for Mintex d & p so will see if winding the piston back and using those pads helps, otherwise I guess it'll have to be a change of calipers. Like you I find the car drifts to the left on the motorway, I have had the tracking done a couple of times at different places and it's still drifted to the left afterwards.

Were the calipers expensive? I thought I read in another post they are over

I'll check for rubbing first then.

They were giving off a lot of heat on Saturday night when I got back from a day trip to Belgium but nothing like as bad as what you had

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread... I just got an octavia mk1 and mine does exactly what you describe. It's recently had discs & pads so I don't want to wreck those due to one of the calipers binding or dragging the pads.

I think a clue here might be that one of my calipers has lost a bit of paint, so I'll check that one first and probably jack it up and spin the wheels over the weekend. I'm also suspicious that the handbrake only needs to come up perhaps 1-2 clicks to be fully activated so I may adjust it back, it could just be due to that being over-adjusted at the last service or not adjusted at all when the new pads went in. VW recommend 5 clicks so it's likely the same on the Octy.

No problems Bob; it sounds like the caliper with the missing paint might well be a bit sticky.

All

I recently had new brake pads and discs fitted at my local dealer, front and rear.

Before that, i never had the mooing noise.

Now, while my car stops a lot more efficiently, the noise when reversing, can be incredible! Note "can" be. sometimes there is no noise, sometimes, neighbour wakening.

It only does this sometimes, and I know i should take it back to get it sorted, but then when i get close to calling, yep, no noise!!

With recent experience of Henry's glasgow, i am waiting till it is so loud it is soooo obvious, they have to do something!

Does anyone have any official feedback from Skoda about this, perhaps more recently than a few years ago?

Thanks

I went back to the dealer not long after I got my VRS from them in spring 2008 complaining about the noise and they said it was a known problem and that they wouldn't be able to do anything until its next service, where (if I footed the bill) they would change the pads that were on it for some updated chamfered-edged ones which would supposedly cure the noise. As it didn't need pads at the November 2008 service I left it and this October replaced both the rear discs and pads myself with Mintex items, which still doesn't seem to have cured the mooing.

So in short yes, Skoda apparently made an updated version of the pads to cure the mooing, but will not supply and/or fit them gratis.

I am just going to live with mine :o

Thanks, although seems strange, if there were updated pads, why would they put the mooing ones on, although recently, at this garage, nothing would surprise me these days.

Its only cos they did it in first place, i am going back to them.

Pffff

I get the moo'ing occasionally, usually when I've been parked up with the handbrake on and go to move off in reverse. If it's really bad, I've found that driving forward a couple of feet without using the brakes usually sorts it. I am then free to reverse without the neighbours thinking there's a herd of aberdeen angus stampeding through the 'hood. :)

Plus my 'fix' is free. :)

Any one know how to adjust the park brake on an Octavia II (A5)

You may like too try the mk2 octavia section, I guess they may know in there.

HTH

Well more on this... Stripped it all down this morning and it's like this:

- nearside wheel binds slightly when jacked up and spinning wheel. Brake piston seal has seen better days but piston winds back in no probs. Pads fitted with removablenanti squeal plate on outside?? Not sure if that's right or not.

- offside wheel spins freely when jacked up, but on closer inspection brake pison is fitted with new seal but will not wind back in at all. Pad with removable plate fitted on piston side this time???

So I think I'm just gonna replace both rear calipers as both would seem to need attention...

Have adjusted a bit of slack into the handbrake mech and have reassembled the pads n calipers with some coppaslip, seems to have stopped the moo'ing but for how long I don't know.

Yeah I know coppaslip isn't ideal but I have always used it and had no probs, bike and car. I do plan on getting some of the brake-specific stuff though when I see some.
