vRS mooing solution?

Featured Replies

I've just got off the phone with my Skoda dealer. He has told me that new information has come through from head office regarding the Octavia Vrs mooing (or groaning) when reversing. Apparantly the fix for the Fabia Vrs doesn't work (maybe that results in the squeaking that loads of you are talking about) however they now seem to think that a different kind of brake pad will do the trick. i'm just waiting for the call from my dealer to tell me they have some in stock and then they will fit them and i will let you know of the outcome.

(I have also contacted SUK informing them of how much money I have spent trying to fix this problem and demanding that the new work should be a proper recall)

Moooooooooooo!

Keep us posted on that one...

SUK pretty much told me that there was no such thing as squeeky brakes:ready2go:

yes i would be interested to see if they fix the problem also.

Do people who have changed to other pads (Ferrdo,Mintex)ect: still have the problem of the MOOoooooo..ing as i would think Skoda's idea isnt going to work if its just different pads fitted?

As said keep us posted,

Cheers

My dealer has confirmed that they have received information of a solution, they tell me it is replacement pads and they will have them in stock on Thursday (others will vary I guess). Cost will be

Yeah Slacks.... I wouldn't put too much blame on them though, I changed mine myself and also got the mooing! I used to reverse onto my drive (down hill) but the noise is so embarrassing I don't now! I'm going to pick up a set on Thursday so here's hoping....

Thanks for the info Joseph.

My dealer (Tunbridge Wells) has also confirmed they have recieved the bulletin regarding this new fix, and have ordered me a set for Friday when my car is booked in for its service. Yay! hope this works! :D

I can't confirm or deny this, but it's not impossible that the problem is one or both of pad material or inadequate brake grease.

I've had similar issues with other makes, which were definately associated with fitting new pads and hence possibly a change of pad material or loss of brake grease.

i got mine fixed at Winchester Skoda apparently balance weights are used to fix it and it was done under warranty:)

Only problem with the weights is although they stopped the mooing, they often caused the brakes to screech when braking. This is going forward, so even more annoying than the mooing problem which only happened in reverse.

I think that fix was originally for the Fabia, and not the Octavia. :)

Hi Guys,

Just had a speedy response from SUK regarding the Mooing issue and it looks like good news - they confim that it's the pads. Below is the email I sent and the reply (which to be fair to SUK came back in only two days) and as you can see they have said that as a good will gesture I can have them for free - get on the phone to your dealer and demand the same.

MY EMAIL TO SKODA:

I'm contacting you regarding my 2001 Octavia Vrs. I'm sure your aware of the mooing/groaning noise that the Vrs suffers from when reversing, i have just got off the phone to my local dealer (Barkers of Hull) who has told me that he has just heard from head office that different brake pads may resolve this problem. I have lost count of the amount of times my car has had this problem looked at, I have also lost count of the money it has cost me (previous new pads, cleaning, stripping of brakes) with no change in the mooing. As this is a known fault with the Octavia Vrs I feel very strongly that if the new pads are the solution then this should be treated as a recall with the costs covered by Skoda UK. Skoda are always coming very high in polls of customer satisfaction (it's one of the reasons why I chose the Vrs over other hot hatchs) so it would be a shame to soil your reputation by not offering this fix for free. I am also in the process of looking for replacement in the next six months and as tempting as the new Octavia Vrs is my experience of this brake problem is making me think twice, I hope to take what i have said on board and also take the time to reply to this e-mail, I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Mr Bilton.

Thank you for your e-mail.

I am sorry to learn about the difficulties that you are encountering with your Octavia’s rear brakes.

I can confirm that we have received some reports of difficulties with the brakes as you have described and have been working with the factory to resolve it. We have recently advised our retailer network that modified brake pads are available which should provide an acceptable resolution.

I therefore recommend that you accept Barkers of Hull’s invitation to have these pads fitted, which will be free of charge as a gesture of goodwill in this instance.

Thank you for contacting us in order that I may investigate your concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Canavan

Wow you write a good letter.

Good work, i hope the new pads work.

i do like the line "soil your reputation"!!

Just got of the blower to SUK..

They acknowledged my previous emails and now suggest that I speak to my dealer again with regards to the new 'fix'.

They suggested that if I don't get the answer that I should, then I am to contact them again.

Spoke to my dealer who informed me that the only person that can help me with regards to recalls etc is on holiday, so I should wait for him to return and speak to him.

Why do I get the feeling of a lack of openess and honesty with what is a simple problem?

Still, I will call soon and see how I get on... At the very least I am going to have the original 'fix' removed to go back to mooing from squealing!

Think I'll talk to my stealer about this when I book in for the next service. Is this a warranty issue as I'm still covered until Feb next year...

TBF, if it's a pad hysteresis issue, it's unpredictable, and not well understood. I'll bet that there's someone out there with a vRS (or maybe an L&K) who's never had mooing.

I can only hope so. The first 'fix' was undertaken as a warranty repair.

Just an update for this issue....

Car has been back to the dealer today to have new pads fitted to the rear brakes that will (hopefully) sort the squeeling brake problem.

As previously said, I had spoken to SUK who referred me to the dealer to resolve (a clouded admission!). I spoke to the dealer that initially were not aware of this problem, but offered to call SUK to find out. I had a call back (thanks Steve at Sparshatts - good guy) who said that a new type of pad had been produced.

And here I am now with nice new pads fitted under warranty:thumbup:

Won't know for sure if sorted until we get a dry spell... fingers crossed.

Mine have been mooing nicely tonight. I dont mind the sound too much, I think Daisy and I have grown fond of it.

Just a little update from me too... I had the new pads fitted recently (15th) and have done a few hundred miles since. So far so good. :D

Although the first fix didn't work properly, my dealer have been really helpful in trying to sort it out and were more than happy to change the pads for me... All done under warranty of course.

I'll try get this fix under warranty on my 2003 vRS which I bought in Jan this year with a 1 year Skoda approved warranty.

My vRS (with 32k on the clock) hasn't done it yet - it'd better hurry up because the warranty runs out in November! New rear pads for free would be nice...:)

Cheers mate. That confirms that it's a pad hysteresis issue.

I heard back from Skoda and they say I cannot get these replaced using the Skoda used car warranty. They have quoted
