Octavia vRS - 97/98 Octane Petrol

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just a couple of quick questions:

I've had my MY07 Octavia vRS for a few weeks (and am loving it so far), and I've been running it on Esso's 97 octane "Supreme" unleaded as it's the only high-octane fuel available on my regular commute.

Is there any particular recommendation for fuel? Should I go out of my way to obtain (or avoid) something else?

Also, can I (or should I) run the car on regular 95-octane fuel?

Cheers,

Ben.

There's been a lot on this, and it is reckoned to be not worth going down to 95. I can't get 98 round here but can get Tesco 99 and the car loves it - not a turbo, just a 2.0FSI but I understand they all prefer "Super" to 95, and I certainly prefer 99 to 97.

In all honesty I don't notice a difference between 95, 97, 98 or 99. But as I'm a sucker, it says "98" on the filler, and because everyone else says their car loves it, I use v-power whenever possible and 97 SUL when no v-power available.

Helpful, eh...

V Power for me too.

I had the 2.0FSI Sport and while not noticing significant (any?) power gains on Tesco 99RON the car did feel smoother and more responsive. I defo think the engine preferred the higher octane stuff.

I've now upgraded to a year old TFSI vRS and while I'm still on my first tank of who knows what was in it before topped up remaining 2/3 on day one with Tesco99. It's my intention to use a full tank of Shell V-power when next near empty to clean her out, then Tesco99 on a regular basis with the odd tank of V-power every couple months just for its enhanced cleaning additives etc.

On another note I had a Civic Type-R a couple years ago and it didn't seem to care whether it was fed on 95, 97, 98 or 99, but the VAG unit can tell the difference I think.

it does seem better on v power, so i might try a tank of 95 at some stage to see if there is much difference in my fsi

Because of the recent Shell Pluspoints debacle I decided to fill up with Tescos 99 out of protest and all honesty it's pretty good stuff, V-Power just has the edge though!.

I've used predominantly V-Power since becoming a TFSI owner but for the last couple of tank fills I've used Tesco 99 and to be completely honest I can't vouch for any noticeable deficit in power, smoothness or economy. Where I am, Tesco 99is only 2p per litre cheaper than V-Power so based on valued views here in the forums and the views of a well respected Briskoda Partner, V-Power seems a safe and reliable bet. However factor in Club Card Points and additional points from using a Tesco Credit card and I'm beginning to think about where I should be filling up. Have to add here that I'm currently on target to cover 35,000 miles a year so the pure economics are of interest to me and I've had problems galore with my Shell Plus Points card. Wouldn't it would be great to see a definitive test of the leading fuels and their effect on performance and economy? :)

I have a TFSI and honestly cannot feel any difference between any different fuels

Not a TFSI but I used Tesco 99 on my last fill instead of the usual V-Power and got around 50 miles less. The difference may be down to my car been setup specifically for V-Power as economy is also slightly better on V-Power than when it was setup for Optimax but not to the same extent as the difference with Tesco 99.

With my previous car (a '99 BMW 318i) the only difference between 95 and 97+ was that I got about 50 more miles on a tank. That alone made it worth running the more expensive fuel as the additional MPG well exceeded the additional cost per litre.

I had assumed that the TFSI engine preferred the high octane fuel, so I'll try and stick with that, and train the other half to do the same!

Thanks for all the answers,

Ben.
