Which Turbo?

Featured Replies

Well, as some of you know, one of my pistons cracked a few weeks ago, so I have been investigating my best options to fix this. Discovered today, that the turbo is now knackered also. It looks like something has got into the turbo/engine and damaged both, thus I again need a new turbo. This particular one was the Garret Hybrid Stage 1....so what do I get next. Allards? Or Garrett Stage 2?

Decisions decisions Dave, unfortunately I have no knowledge on turbos but I guess the best advice I can give you is...........GET THE FECKING QUICKEST ONE!!!!!!! :D

Quickest one, I presume you mean, quickest spooling? That would be the small one. I'd personally go for.. The biggest one.

This should do the trick....

Stage 2 would be the easiest way and loads of mappers can map it. Think it uses a compressor wheel from a GT2052 or GT2056.

As we've found out with Jason not everyone can map big turbo's. No idea what spec the allard turbo's are as they dont like to tell people.

Money no object get a GT2256 from a 3.0d BMW, custom manifold and other bits and get a decent mapper to map it.

Check out TDIClub.com and search for aligator. Loads of info their.

Cant believe you got that unlucky :(

All kinda depends on how crazy you're gonna go, go for a massive one if you are prepared to stick in larger injectors etc, otherwise a stage 2 hybrid like the one I've got is a fine choice :)

Personally if you have a bit of money to burn in your wallet. I would speak to a tuning company who build their own turbochargers to your specification. A lot of people go for the biggest turbo as they think it is the best and what they dont realise is that there is plenty of lag created by these. You can actually make your car perform worse as you are forever waiting for the turbocharger to spool up. Great for the track but not great for town driving.

I would go for a custom built / hybrid turbo that keeps lag down to a minimum yet does not run out of boost at the high rev ranges. Or an off the shelf item that does similar. Speak to the manufacturer / tuner and tell them what you are after and they will be able to guide you to the most suitable turbocharger.

This is basically what Allard do. :)

what the feck

I think Allard know what they are doing :)

From reputable sources I hear that the TD build truly excellent quality turbos - better than others. Also the PD130 engines don't like too much boost.

The stage 2 has the turbine of the VNT17 with the compressor of the VNT20. You could put a proper VNT20 on for a few more bhp. The hybrid gives you Quick low end spool. Turbodynamics will gladly send you the spec sheets on their PD turbos if you email them.

I've heard that injectors get maxxed out pretty quick, unless you enjoy sooting up the world 24/7.

My last upgrade (?) will be the TD stage 2 with uprating my exisiting injectors. My own humble opinion - I don't believe that a couple of extra bhp at redline warrants any potential loss of torque down low or any potential loss of real-world driveability.

Personally with Diesels I would go the Allard route every time, they pioneered Turbocharging in the UK long before any major manufacturers were fitting them & Lloyds success with the Diesel in the VW cup is proof that they still are one of the best in the world when it comes to Turbos, They also make some rather nice Intercoolers :) :)

Great to have choice - and Allards are real pros no argument whatsoever.

The old knackered turbo could be rebuilt to a stage 2, or its integral manifold cut and welded to fit a full-on VNT20 (or VT-5).

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies so far guys. The car is going on the back burner for a while I think. Quite frankly doing my head in and bleeding me dry.

I have used Allards in the past and know there work is top notch, so i'll more than likely speak to them in the not too distant future.
