Clutch problem...or is it?

Featured Replies

During a quick run out last night, something didnt feel quite right, so i took the car to work today instead of the van...

Under acceleration, the revs same to race ahead and then catch up, and i'm almost certain the car isn't pulling like normal.

1st instinct was clutch slip, but 5th gear @ 30 mph on an incline, then foot down hard and the car pulls fine and the revs don't race away..

It seems to do this thru all the gears too.

The damn thing was only serviced 2 weeks ago, i'm wondering if they've buggered something up ?

Any suggestions?

Incidentally, the car has suffered on 2 or 3 occasions with sticky clutch pedal syndrome....a connection maybe?

Could the clutch pedal have been sticking down when it happened, Geoff?

Denis, first thing i did was hook my foot under the pedal, it was right back at the top of its travel :(

But, surely, accelerating from 30 in 5th won't produce much torque? When the clutch on my RS went, it was fine up to 3000-ish, where the turbo cuts in -after that it was hopeless........

Phil, the car's only done 10K

If it's a major clutch prob i would think it would slip under heavy load from low revs ?

Sounds similar to what I have experience twice now.

When wet under acceleration have got wheel spin.....fine but....on changing up through the gears all I get is a rise in revs....I to wondered if this was clutch slip but.....I don't get any clutch burning smell.

I think someone said it might be the release bearing. Could this be another sympton of the master cylinder problem? I have had the clutch pedal drop a couple of time as well.

From the symptoms certainly sounds like clutch slip.

Any smell of burning friction material?

Me finks I best order some AA van's.

Geoff, I had similar on 4x4, only very fleeting moments of eh whats that arh off again. After trade in it was reported that the clutch was dead/nearly gone...if only on 10k I'd have a go for a new one before you do to much more to car. Best they can do is check it out, or try a few 0-60 runs that will either kill it or confirm it's okay ;)

If it's erring on the side of dead give me a shout I have a cunning plan ;)

No burning smell at all...

Adrian, release burning sprang to mind too.

I'm off to Newcastle to pick the DS2500's up now, between that and the Jabba trip tomorrow i might have a few more answers..

Colin, if it's a new clutch i need, then i'll be asking some very serious questions about build quality & reliability, ok its re-mapped, but 10K out of a clutch??...Its not like i'm on track every oher week...

Cheers chaps :)

A clutch should last way longer than 10K regardless of remapping (after all it's not that much difference :P)

In a diesel obviously torque (where clutch slip would be evident) is way down just below 2000RPM, so I suspect in a 1.8T it's a bit higher? (unless the torque curve has been elongated by Jabba ;)) I'd be tempted to try 3000RPM to 7000RPM(ish) in 2nd/3rd/4th/5th and see what that does.

mine went at 4k.

:D

..............And mine at 3k!

Reminds me of something else to retrieve off the wreck and see what condition it's in ;)

Actually thats an idea - I need to get an idea of bits to retrieve that I may not have thought about...

I'm thinking more a change in material (as others suggested to me; I'm not that informed about spinny splat turny things) might be indicative of recent issues. That is some of the '99, 00's have been solid, '01'02 exhibit early failure despite similar types of driving. No material is perfect unless it's expensive, I suspect VAG don't use container/lot tracing material...possibly just old shelf material.

Let me know as I am realyl expecting mine to say bye bye any day especially as I have just upped the torque by 50ftlbs at least from superc***s.

Well, just did a 70 mile round trip, and some extensive testing on 2 private roads i have access to (aka the A1M & A689 :D )

All seems normal again

I'll give it a proper test tomorrow.
