Is is just me...Tesco vs. Shell

Featured Replies

Since there's a Tesco garage just down the road I've been using their petrol for years and latterly their diesel (having left the company car scheme and got my own 1.9tdi Elegance estate).

When the contamination problem arose with Tesco petrol a few months ago I got to thinking they may not be too careful about what they put in their diesel (with it now being my own car). So, I start buying Shell diesel. As well as being 1p/litre cheaper than Tesco the car seems to run much sweeter (can a diesel run sweeter or is that a contradiction in terms ?).Surely it must be made to the same spec. ?

Well........is it just me.....what do you lot think ?

Richard

Shell Diesel is GOOD and (if you can get it) Shell Diesel V-Power is BETTER.

Tesco Diesel is ordinary but their Tesco super unleaded 99 give Shell's V-power a run for its money.

At the end of the day; if you are comforatble with it (Shell) and it feels right - then it probably is.

it may or may not run sweeter - but it's more efficient :-)

i tried v-power diesel and it just didnt feel and sound the same as BP ultimate but v-power is alot cheaper as im payin 106.9p litre for BP ULTIMATE.

Might have to go to shell v-power to cut my fuel costs!

Not in my experience. Tesco Diesel is the worst I've used for economy and how the car drives. Other supermarket fuel such as sainsburys is alot better.

I've had exactly the opposite experience of Tesco and Sainsbury! I guess it comes down to which supplier they're each using locally....

Chris

Quite Like Sainsburys fuel, especially when their SUper is cheaper than the standard fuel at our local BP.

Made the mistake of filling up with Waitrose fuel the other week and the car was absolutely awful!

In my shell/Tesco fuel experiments, Tesco's stuff came out more efficient and cheeper to buy. Wonder if they'll do "finest" diesel soon, like they do with the petrol?

Phil

I won't use Tesco for diesel. Tried a tankful once in my first Fabia, when I had a money off voucher, but never again. Consumption increased by 4mpg for my usual journies - same roads, same style etc.

I use Shell almost exclusively, although I did find the Sainsbury's diesel to be fine, as I used it quite a bit in the Ibiza. No ill effects, no perceivable affect on performance or economy.

As Chris says - most likely down to where local branches are sourcing it from, and I may just have got an 'off' batch from Tesco's that time, but it's certainly put me off! That said, I got another voucher with this week's shop, so perhaps I'll give it another go :rubchin: - 5p a litre off is quite tempting!

Cheers,

Steve

I used to use Tesco all the time as it was cheaper and easier to get. However after a tank full of Shell Diesel Extra the car seemed to run a bit better and the economy was slightly improved.

The shell diesel extra is the same price as Tesco diesel in wrexham so I use Shell exclusively. I have been tempted by Asda recently though, I see they do a credit card that lets you get 2p off every litre of fuel and that could save me alot of money during a year.

Anyone use asda diesel?

No problems with Tesco compared to Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrison's, BP or Texaco (the other garages near me) All seems like much of a muchness to me! :o

All seems the same to me. The only stuff that seems any different in the French stuff, which seems smellier. However, it costs 70p-ish a litre!

Phil

I have always used Tesco diesel but find that the motor runs much sweeter with Millers Sport 4 added at the standard 1ml per ltr.

Car feels smoother and marginally quicker. Other threads rate the use of Millers as better than running on HQ diesels (Shell/BP) and if you buy the 5ltr can (mine was

IIRC, all French diesel contains 5% bio, which improves emissions and economy slightly, and will run a little smoother too. Why it isn't added in this country I don't know!

Phil

I use anything and have never noticed a difference, apart from in price, from using different diesels. I always lob a good 50ml+ of millers in with a tankful, and that seems to refine the car a bit more. Not sure where I normally fill up. Tends to be a supermarket, but occasionally is a BP or shell.

I thought Tesco City Diesel was a B5 blend (5% biodiesel)? Could be wrong though - usually am these days... :o

may depend on the station, hence mixed opinions. I'm off to fill up after work, so I'll take a look.

Phil

I always try to fill up at the local Shell garage, car always seems to run nice on it. Also it is always the same price as the supermarkets, and I've never liked using supermarket fuel. Their has to be a reason for it being cheaper.

My local shell garage in Taunton is 95.9p per Lt for diesel

have only used Shell since I bought my car in May 2005

also run my works van Peugoet Partner diesel on shell

both vehicles run smoothly and considering how the van

is thrashed daily get about 500mls from a tankfull .......

added bonus is now shell do a club card so will get some

money off fuel vouchers for my car

also double points on 200 Lts or more a month

Yep.....................buying power!

Yep.....................buying power!

It's not just that, though. What people may not realise is that most 'branded' petrol stations are franchises, whereas supermarkets (and their associated petrol stations) are just branches of a much larger organisation. Therefore, each individual branded petrol station has to make sufficient profit to cover all its costs, whereas the supermarket petrol stations only need to make sure that their profits (or indeed losses) don't drag down the profitability of the overall supermarket. Of course, the supermarkets make super-duper profits, and so therefore they can afford to sell fuel at a pretty low mark-up, or with things like Tesco's 5p-off vouchers, even as a loss-leader...

I took advantage of the 5p off from Tesco and have run a few tanks of Tesco 99 against my usual tipple of v-power. Driving wise I don't feel any difference between the 2 but on average I have gotten 30 miles more per tank full out of V-Power.

I normally always use v-power, if not I will fall back to Tesco 99, I had to put some BP ultimate in on the way back from Cardiff the other week as I forgot to fill up before I left, the car was noticeably more sluggish than either Shell or Tesco.

What octane is Ultimate?

What octane is Ultimate?

If recent posts / newspaper rumours are anything to go by, about 0.0000000000000000001 RON! :D

I seem to remember filling up with Ultimate Diesel one time (I think there may have been a fuel shortage) and thinking to myself that it was odd that there was no obvious RON number on the Ultimate Petrol pump. Might have just not seen it, though, rather than it not being there! :o

What octane is Ultimate?

IIRC it's 97, in it's defence my car is setup for 99RON ..... did seem a bit pants though in comparisson to v-power / tesco99
