startup noise

Featured Replies

When i start my 4x4 1.8t from cold there is a very loud ticking noise from the engine bay.It varies with the engine speed. It dosent sound very good to me what do you think it is?.It goes after a couple of minutes,is it that pump thing?

If its varying with revs it sounds like it could be the cam chain tensioner, not uncommon but worth getting confirmed and sorted.

That noise wouldnt change with engine RPM though.

stick your head in the engine bay with it running and look at the black box with little pipes on the left of the bay

this one actually circled yellow 15763.attach

Sorry for the dodgy artwork

Put your finger on it you will feel it ticking

If its this don't worry, if it isnt this get it looked at pronto

It had a cambelt kit and water pump less than 2 weeks ago.Would they have changed the tensioner?

Not for the cam chain no.

But if its making noises i'd get it back there pretty quick just in case.

Its a 1.8 turbo petrol with a cam belt not chain. It was doing it before the cam belt change.I asked them to look and they couldnt find anything wrong.

The 1.8T has a cam chain as well as a belt.

Still sounds like the chain to me.

Its under skoda warranty for another 11 months, because i brought it S/H from a dealer.I will phone them tommorow and see what they say.It only does if for about 2 minutes then it stops.

Its the time it takes for the oil pressure to build up enough in the tensioner to take the slack out of the chain. I have replaced quite a few for it in the past.

Is it ok to drive.I always let it warm up for a couple of minutes before i go anywhere and i always let the engine run at the end of a journey for a while.

It should be ok to drive but id get it looked at sooner rather than later.

Thanks for that.I would imagine your a technician for audi/skoda/vw.

Yes all of those and SEAT in the past.

:)

4x4

You can have that looking at locally if its under warranty, you don't have to come back up here again your probably better off using someone different tbh

White dove told me that i could have my local dealer do anything else.I am not driving up there again and back in one day(left at 5.15 am got home 8.30 pm big crash on M5).I will phone white dove tommorow and let them know and then phone my local dealer(5 miles away not 205miles).Needs drivers electric window switch aswell(are they seperate or one unit with 4 window switches + other switches for CL and door locking)

Now you done it i recently posted about noise's during cold, start this morning mine sounded particuly terrible almost like a fanbelt slipping. It only does it first thing in the morning the rest of the day it's fine

(here comes the question)

How easy is it to check the cam chain tensioner just be on the safe side ??

It May well be the auxillary drive belt. Mine used to sound bad first thing in the morning, like a high pitch squeal.Only after about a mile down the road did it stop. A replacment of the belt soon cleared the problem. From looking at the belt you would never be able to tell it was knackered.
