Its getting worse it does it for about 10 minutes. Will phone dealer tommorow and book it in.Sounds like it comes from the left side of the engine. Its not the black box on top of the wing that just ticks. It gets quieter as the engine warms up.

Has been to my local dealer today and they said that the engine noise is ok they all do it ???.They have found a fault on one of the turbo pipes on the boost side its leaking. This will be done under warranty. They looked at a couple of other problems that i am having which are window switch sticks up,they will replace the switch under warranty and a small damp patch at the top of the plastic windscreen pillar they have pushed the pipe for the sunroof drain on further.Waiting for them to get parts in to do the jobs. Will be going in next week for this.

Don't mean to scare but i don't think you should have any noise for 10 mins on start up. The only noise that is heard is secondry air pump doin its thing for around 1 min. The bit about "they all do it" is a standard reply in my experience. If you're not happy keep on to them. If what lummox says is right (highly likely) it could cause allsorts of problems later on.

Hope you get it sorted

Thought i would drag this one up and say it has been fixed by a replacement oil pump done under warranty.

Glad its sorted mate :)

I think you were right.I would imagine it took a while for it to get full pressure to the cam chain tensioner and that was the noise i could hear, untill it tightened the chain.Has been good for two days.Sump guard and tow bar being fitted next week.

Panic over it was the aux belt all along

Fatty, was it easy to change the aux belt?

Do I need any funny tools, or a new tensioner etc?

I have no strange noises, just belt whistle on cold wet mornings. Guessing a fresh belt will cure it, as mine looks like the original one!

Does the tensioner auto-tension it or something? Or will I need to set the tension by feel or fish scales?

Merci

My mate did it in about 2 mins iirc.

Theres a little lump of metal on top of the tensioner and he placed a steel tube over too grip it and pulled it towards the front of the engine bay (I think) slip the old one off and bung the new one on and jobs a good 'un. Tensions itself I belive

This is from memory btw. So I may have it slightly wrong but thats the jist of it.

HTH

What fatty said but i used a spanner on the tensioner.

Cheers guys, belt is ordered.

I had a simliar noise which turn out to be a common fault. It was an pump on the system, the name of which I cant bloody remember! It was due to the original spec one not ebing up to the job, the new one came with bolts instead of screws and went off after the initial extra revs went on cold start. It's a pump for assisting the cat or the like on cold start. I will put the grey matter to work at trying to remember

Let me help, secondary air pump.

that's the one, cheers mate, been a bloody hard day and the grey matters not in tune! The noise only lasted when the cold start revs where on, gone other than then and not present if started warm. Went 1 month out of warantee typically!

I've had a similar thing when starting up just a ticking for the first minute or two. I don't know if its in my head but initial start up seems to have been a bit noisier recently. I've only noticed it since the mornings got a little cooler The cam belt is nearly due to be done at 53-54k.

You might find it gets louder over time. The garage I took mine to first didnt have a clue (so havent been back there!) but the second found the fault in the secondary pump as described above. It's basically the screws that fit around the pump that come apart and the pump then needs replacing with a new one, which the manufacture have now upgraded to one with nuts and bolts to hold it together, so I guess its a design fault. Mine went at that kind of mileage.

I've also just had my cam belt done at 74k and luckily it wasnt too bad as Skoda have changed the recommendation for the belt to 60k down from 80k

And the water pump i hope?

And the water pump i hope?

No, not the water pump

No, not the water pump

:orb_duh:oops, hope it don't fail on you mate. Should always replace water pump at the belt change to save the cost of having the belt off again if the pump fails. This is what happens:

Fingers crossed then! I had the pulleys etc. all replaced, but no, not the water pump!
