Featured Replies

My buddy is getting a octavia 1.8tsi 160bhp next week its replacing his Octavia 2.0 FSI, cant wait to give it a poke on thiose cork roads

Are you sure??

I didn't think Skoda had that engine yet, it's certainly not listed in the fairly up to date documantation I have. Also isn't listed as being available on the Skoda.ie website.

Well every day is a school day.

Do we know what the engine code is for it?

Top gear magazine has it listed. An L&K 1.8TFSI is

Wonder what potential that engine will have on the modding front ??

A damn sight more than the 2.0FSI thats for sure :D

The 2.0TFSI gains about 20% from a remap. With similar gains on the smaller capacity version you are looking at about 190bhp

I think it's EA888

So why is there more scope for modding on the 1.8 over the 2.0? Just replying to dstev2000's comment.

Because the 2.0FSI is naturally aspirated engine (note the lack of a "T" denoting Turbo). Turbos are much easier to get more power from.

IIRC the 1.8 has now been remapped to 143Kw by someone, that's only 4Kw less than a stock BWA 2.0TFSI.

Ah, yeah, of course. I think I assumed the 2.0 had some sort of forced induction as well cos most cars seem to nowadays.

Never heard of power being measured in what I assume to be kilowatts! How does that compare to good old fashioned BHP & torque?

All european manufactors have been quoting their vehicles by Kw output (stickered up/manuals) for quite a while.

Conversions for kw to bhp;

Online Conversion - Power Conversion

That's what happens when you like old cars I guess: slip behind the times! :0)

Here in Oz we changed to Kw (power) and Nm (torque) figures over 20 years ago, but it isn't unusual to see Hp and ft/lbs quoted. I still have a feeling for how big (or small) a Hp figure is for a given size of car, but the mental computation for ft/lbs got lost somewhere over the last 2 decades (maybe oldtimer's disease ? ).

Tuners seem to like quoting in Hp more than Kw because their increase (number) is larger.

Used to have a Passat with an earlier version of this engine (150hp).

If you have enough cash there are people who will take it up to 600 - yes 600 BHP.

I think the 150bhp 1.8T was the older engine used in the Golf GTi, SEAT Leon Cupra and MK1 Octavia VRs...etc....etc....

This new 160bhp 1.8T is an all new unit. From what I have read about it, it seems to get very good reviews for it's refinement and power delivery.

Been talking to the guy I got my 2.0FSI from, and he says the 1.8TSI is turbo AND supercharged - much less lack of low down boost. Sounds interesting.

Doesn't reckon to see them before the Autumn though.

He's wrong.

No supercharger

He is wrong.

They all now carry the TSi name as FSi operation has been dropped. Doesnt mean they all have superchargers though.

Well he's half right - the new 1.8 "TSI" is turbo only (no supercharger as stated by Lummox), but it does have very good torque at only 1,500rpm

The move to the TSI badge for everything petrol with a turbo is confusing lots of people. AFAIK the only "twincharger" motor VAG have released for general production (so far) is the 1.4 petrol in Golf GTs.

Well I wonder where he got the info from, because he was reading from a PC monitor he had looked it up on. Very odd. I must say I thought it was a bit peculiar to have both but I could see how maybe a small supercharger would do some work before the turbo kicked in.

I just checked another web site and I reckon he was talking about VWs 1.8 which does have both.

Erm I'd tend to believe lummox here. He is a VW master tech and sees these engines all day long.

It's not just the golf GT, it's also in other models, like the Touran and Jetta

It's kind of confusing, there is a 1.4 TSI in the leon (125ps) but I have been told that this does NOT have a supercharger, as with the New Superb. However I beleived that TSI stood for Turbo Supercharger Injection

I didn't mean where Lummox got his info, I meant the dealer sales person!
