There is nothing like finishing a stressful day at work and seeing your belovid Furby nestled in a hedge!

Yup it happens with a car with rear discs and if you dont pull the handbrake up tight enough. Rear brakes cool down after a run and the brakes contract and release.

Bad luck mate:thumbdwn:

I usually find pulling the lever between the seats applies the rear brakes
;)

Dont forget to leave it in gear too;)

Hope theres no damage

Never leave a car in gear against the gear if you get me. Does the gearbox no favours at all. By all means its fine as a back up.

Yup, seem to remember a neighbour's Citroen GS doing this about 30 years ago - not a new problem and certainly not a "VAG only" problem. In that case the car went in through the rear of another neighbour's sectional garage. I always leave the car in first or reverse to avoid this when parking away from home - that might lead to other problems in the event of a shunt, but at least I will not be the person that caused the shunt.

Yeh I must admit it definitly caught me by surprise. Both wings are okay, the scratches polished out - I am going to have another attempt at the bumper but I think thats in need of a respray; there are some deep scratches. That tree you can see is what it came to rest against.

Real shame that mate. I hope you can get it sorted

~I dont get you

I think he means, if you were to engage the gear, then leave the handbrake off so that there is tension there

Thanks

I was puzzled then

I park my car on my drive which is rather steep and always put in gear when its parked up

I was worried for a bit then

Yeh Lum means its not good to leave the gearbox 'loaded' if you will. Something that will occur if you put it in gear and the car then tries to move and rests against the gear. This can always be tested because if you leave it in gear and return to your car you should be able to just slip it out of gear again without needing to depress the clutch. If it wont budge then the gear has become loaded, so naturally its under stress. If it just slips right out again then its fine.

Yeah sorry for the confusion.

Your ok if you apply the handbrake and stick it in gear for a back up.

Blimey Dan - have you been driving in a manner which might get some heat in those rear discs? ;)

IIRC, the manual suggests to apply the handbrake, push the footbrake and then pull the handbrake up a bit more. I always leave the car in gear as a back up now as I don't trust rear disc brakes!
