Maximum distance between variable services almost exceeded!

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia TDi 110 on variable servicing. The maximum interval between services is 50,000 km which is 31,250 miles.

I had the car serviced at 109,242 and now it reads 139,342, which is a difference of 30,100 miles - and the 1000-mile left light still hasn't come on!

I'm having it serviced on Tuesday anyway. I'll get them to read the service indicators and see what's going on. Either a) I drive like a saint  or B) it's broken...

I'm in a similar position with my Mk1 vRS. I've done 16,000 miles and don't consider myself to drive like a saint either, but the service light still is nowhere to be seen.

Plus the original Continental tyres are looking good, so I'll have to change my driving style I think, or I run the risk of looking like a bit of a girl.:o

Skinnyman, you still have a theoretical 2,600 miles to go maximum.

Mk1 Octy vRS here, on variable servicing, done 7000 miles since I bought it (now on 35000) and the light has come on. I don't drive it too hard most of the time either. It has been 14 months since the last service. Does this seem wrong to ayone else?

I now have a feeling it is on fixed servicing, despite being told otherwise by the main dealer.

Good point Lummox. I had a mileage of 14,000 in my head taking my driving style into consideration. However, I must be reasonably restrained. Do you think the insurance companies should take note of this?

I may get a discount for being a big girls blouse.:D

31,250 miles in between servicing? I don't care how long life the oil is, that's just wrong!

I thought that on Mk1s it was 20k or 2 years?

my mk1 vRS was seviced at 20K and 37k on variable, now at 51k.

Why?

I know, I know. As I've said before, I don't care how long the manufacturer specified intervals are - they designed it, not me. I just want to make sure the car sticks to them.

According to Google, 50,000 km = 31068 miles, so I've actually got less than 1000 miles left

My Passat was last serviced at 106k, its now on 121k with no sign of a service light, which might not be that surprising... however, it absolutely gets its head kicked in sometimes, a proper good hard prolonged thrashing.

Hmmm.

How exactly does the car decide when it needs servicing anyway?

When you skint.:D

A thermal sensor in the sump sends signals to the dash insert. The sensor measures the quality of the oil as a resistance iirc and this info is sent to the dash insert where a calculation is done with the parameters set into it.

So in theory a car that uses a lot of oil should have a prolonged service interval?

Where as my car uses no oil and is due a service at about 16.5K

My two services on my PD130 have been at just over 18K each so I must be fairly consistent in my driving. The first 18K I got an oil warning light at about 9K this time it has just come on and I've got 600 miles showing to service.

I must admit this whole variable service kinda makes me a little nervous, and I've forgotten to do the brake fluid change at 2 years since the car wasn't serviced doh!

I still don't understand why a diesel Mk1 should only need servicing every 31k? That must be wrong.

Nope UP TO 31K miles/2 years is what it says in my manual.

Well, Inde-Tech reset the service interval before checking the adaption values, so I have no idea how long it had left. I'll report back in another 30,000 miles ;)
