Diesel Startup When Warm

Featured Replies

Lads,

Just wondering... when starting up my Octavia when its warm - for example in a petrol station.. I notice it takes a few more turns of the starter for it to get going. I always thought this was a characteristic of diesel engines due to compression or whatever, but after talking to a local mechanic he told me "I dont like the sound of that... I deal with diesels regularly", even though I have never had a problem starting the car. Is this normal?

Cheers!

Hi Mate

Could just be worth putting a new temp sensor on to the car

It is not that expensive and may help a tad

But I dont think this is normal

Sarah

Not normal IME (several diesels, various makes, models, and engines, driven, and they've all started better when hot, even the Montego (ex-boss's company car), and the V@*xh@11 C0r$@ (pool car).

Sarah might have a point with the temperature sensor.

Thanks guys. If I start it up in the morning when its cold its starts fine - straight away, just when its warm its hot it needs a few extra rotations. Maybe I will look into that temp sensor...

Mine does this sometimes. It was suggested that it was the temperature sensor in the fule injector unit that could be faulty. However this is not deemed to be a DIY job, and only something a diesel specalist could do.

I would do a long drive (1hr30) back from work, stop at a filling station, and then the car would turn ouver for a good few seconds (5+) before actually starting.

Thinking about it, this has not happened recently and seemed to be more tied in with the colder/winter weather - or more so when it was dark....

If the starter struggles to turn over the motor when hot but turns it over no bother when cold then your starter may be on its last legs

This is probably irrelevant, but I had a diesel Peugeot years back, that started fine from cold, but would not even turn over when hot. I used to have to wait for 30 mins at least before the car would start again.

I had a new alternator, and starter fitted, and after all that, it turned out to be a wiring fault smewhere between the alternator & starter.
