KPH speedo

Featured Replies

Does anybody know is it possible to put a MPH speedo in a car that has a KPH speedo? I was hoping to get a KPH speedo with the MPH on the inside but apprentaly skoda dont do one now! Any help would be greatly appreciated as only having KPH on my speedo is driving me nuts as im a brit and we have miles and apart from knowing what 50kph and 120kph is i have no idea!!!

cheers

In theory yes, however it maybe easier to just replace the speedo backing with an MPH one. Just do some searching round scrap yards for a car with the same engine as yours and the same speedo max speed, and swap it over.

Just make sure the speeds line up as on VW Golf's at least there are different variations of speedo both with the same top speed but the increments are different.

There seem to be plenty of broken vrs's this side of the water. If you swap the dashpod for a secondhand used one, you will need the codes for the both old/new dashpod as the immobiliser is built into the dashpod and linked to the ecu. Thats not a problem for your current KPH one as you have those, or should have. The problem will be getting the codes for the 2nd hand one.

Search on ebay for something called vagtacho as that will do this without the codes, it also allows the mileage to be reset which vagcom can't do even with the SKC.

is it just not possible to get one (dial) in the uk and fit it as the speedo will point to the same point on the dial? surely where it points on the dial saying miles it will be the same in KPH?

As suggested above you could just swap the foil for the speedo but you'll find it difficult to get hold of it without buying a complete cluster.

over my head dude!!...whats a foil? ....surely you can just get the bit with the numbers on it ?!! seems a bit daft you have to get the whole unit!.....or is it me is thats being a bit daft!!.....wouldnt be the first time!!!:)

Easy to fit, 2 screws hold it in IIRC and 2 multiplugs on the back.

This would need coding though to your car as it contains the immobiliser, I have the 4 digit code from the unit but I believe you also need your 4 digit code from the clear plastic fob you got with the car when new.

You would also have to ensure your mileage was transferred across to it accuratley to keep everything in order.

Your dealer shouldnt have a problem, its a Skoda part and I have the receipt for it from a skoda dealer (Around

The foil is the bit with the numbers on and no it's not available seperately.

Thought I had broken mine when splitting it and fitting dash rings around the speedos when I stood on the circuit board and fell over :o

but my mate who is some sort of circuit board guru for an electronics company took it away and fixed it.

I had already been and bought the pod, then I went on course to Gosport for 8 weeks and never took it back to dealers for a refund, by that time I thought it was too late anyway.

all this just so i can have a speedo that shows kph and mph!! cant understand why ireland has done away with miles all together!!....thought that there might be a section in the NCT (mot) that would say that if you have a new car it has to be only in KPH, but alas no! it just has to have a working speedo!

k:)

heres a pic, if nothing else it'll let you see where the retaining screws are

agree with the above - if you get a wrecked speedo, you could remove the indicator foil plate behind the needle and carefully glue it into the new one. Needs a fine touch - do a search on Milotech.de for PDF instructions on how to insert their chrome rings for the speedo - it has all the skinny...

No glue needed and it's very easy. I've swapped foils quite a few times on the various clocks I've used in my Octavia.

They use kph because it's a sensible unit of measurement. ;) They can easily be converted to other units. Of course, meters per second would be even better in some circumstances.

Big W, how much are you wanting for your unit?

I have a european Fabia I have to convert to show mph if i want to register it here. I'm looking for the cheapest possible option to show mph (somehow), otherwise I will sell it as a european model maybe to someone who is on transfer to Europe.

Are there digital speedos around that can be mounted on you dash? i have heard this is what some of the importers do.
