Thirsty 2.0 TDI

Featured Replies

My Octy has become a little thirtsy but not for fuel! It seems to like coolant, only taking little sipps but about once a week drops below the minimum level in the expansion tank and "STOP - Coolant" appears in the display!

Trouble is it's now done it 4 times and I don't stop! I know it's only a little bit of water so I'll stop when it suits me, although if the car cries woilf one more time it might prove fatal!

Anyone had similar issues, where should I look, certainly can't see any fluid lose on my drive etc

check your oil on the dipstick for traces of water, could be a headgasket problem

...Or indeed 'mayonnaise' under the (oil) filler cap.

I've heard of issues with the (coolant) filler cap where minor losses can occur due to the spring in the cap wearing out, thus reducing the pressure the coolant system can go up to, and leading to loss of coolant as steam. Might explain why it seems to be intermittent, as I guess it would depend on what temperature the engine got up to...?

There have been reports of some 2.0 TDIs having a porous head.

Whatever mate, theres a problem so its a definite warranty job. Could be anything from a split hose, a loose hose clip to a blown head gasket.

Could be any number of faults but either way there is a fault and a dealer visit is recommended.

You are still in waranty aren't you? No problem.

Leaking hose or expansion tank cap sound most likely. The 1.4 Fabias have a soft spot for the temperature sender leaking, so a possibility here. The worshop should pressure test the system and this ought to show the fault in about 30 seconds!

Dealer job for sure

Ah; didn't see you had the Limp Mode problem as well; definitely a dealer visit required.

PS> Sorry to hear you have problems :( - hope they get sorted quickly and efficiently.

crack an egg in the coolant resevoir, it will find the leak and block it for you, saves a trip down to the stealers and saves you a bit of time. Cost of repair in the region of 10 pence.

Will all the mods not invalidate that?

Not recommended for a modern car. You might block the leak and what else ...?

Just seen that you have been Jabb'd; worth talking to them pehaps about the 'limp mode' problem, perhaps.

After having further issues this morning, ie "Emissions - Workshop" and permanent limp mode this morning the car is be collected shortly and taken to my local dealer for repair, diagnosis, suspect turbo and head gasket......

Let's hope warranty covers all of it....

Well if it is the iffy Rad you might be ok. Same goes for anything if you haven't modded it, but if the thing has been Revo'd etc I would have thought that Skoda/VAG would wash their hands of turbo/head gasket problems :(

Any news Steve?

Any news Steve?

No real news :(

It's in the garage at present and I have a Zafira for the weekend (thanks VW Assistance), dealer can't find any major fault codes which is concerning cos it's definately got a major fault!

They actually phoned me to ask what was wrong! I said drive it, it's obvious!

At this rate I'll have the bluetooth before the car is back! Got 2 sets of cables ready, as they were cheap I ordered to from my contact at my local VW dealer, had them in 2 days!

You get the plugs as well?
