Record for the Quickest Breakdown ?

Featured Replies

I took ownership of my brand spanking new Superb 2.5 TDI L&K four weeks ago. Love the colour, love the wheels and love the overall build quality. Had it for just over one week, pulled into a garage to fill up with diesel and then went to start it up.............nothing ! The AA towed me to my nearest dealer. The dealer confirmed that the starter motor was completely shot and a new one was ordered. Mileage on the car ? 430 miles :)

Actually didn't bother me - but I had to laugh when the Sales Director came out to ask how I was enjoying my new Superb and I explained I had just been towed to his dealership as it had totally failed to start !

That small teething problem has not put me off. Really like the car and it is perfect for my needs. Have also been pleasantly surprised by its turn of speed now the motor has loosened up a bit...........and my previous car was a modified Cooper S churning out 230BHP so I had reasonably high expectations.

Can't say that I have ever heard of the Starter Motor going on the Superb and I am sorry to hear about this but glad your still happy with it!!

Unsure as too whether the newer Superb's are built worse than the older ones as there seems to be more and more threads in this forum with people having problems? Either that or their are more members on this site as I have certianly seen an increase in the number of Superb's on the road!!

Starter motors regularly failed from new on many marques when I worked in car rental. SWMBOs starter motor failed on her brand new Focus on the dealer forecourt the day we went to collect it! They canniblised another from new unregistered car while we waited and nothing has failed since in four years and 37k miles later....

Mine was second-hand - but from a main dealer - and it broke down within 2 hrs of my collecting it!

The CV joint went about 20m away from my house, so had to be towed back to the dealers for a week. That was six months / 19k miles ago, and it's been great ever since.

My record is 3 weeks for a brand new Octavia vRS TDi with 1070 miles on it.

Went to the garage on evening to go out and the car was stone dead - just clicked when i turned the key !

Skoda assistance sent a RAC guy out and he couldn't get it to start even by jumping it directly from his transit  It was turning over fine but wouldn't catch.

This is where it starts getting interesting.

The RAC guy asks when the last time I'd refueled the car was? - The previous day on the way home (about a mile-ish)

I've been driving diesel cars exclusively for 3 years so was reasonably sure I'd put the correct stuff in.

He pulled the fuel pipe off to check the fuel and decided that it was petrol !

When confronted by a small pool of petrol smelling fuel in a professionals hand (I also thought that it smelled of petrol as well) you sort of give up hope of something simple being the problem.

The car was trailered the following morning to the dealer (Clock garage, Derby) to be looked at.

I went to the petrol station where I'd filled up and they found me on their security cameras clearly putting diesel (BP ultimate) into the car and even traced the sale by the time on the security camera to the computer record and printed off a receipt for the sale ! :)

Contacted the dealer to tell them that I'd got a receipt saying that it was diesel only to be told that the fuel had been checked - it was diesel, and the battery had been replaced - the RAC guy couldn't start the engine as the battery had gone so flat that the car had thought that it was being stolen (somebody removing the battery to try to get around the security) and had locked the engine down. They had to restart it with the diagnostic computer.

Note to self - GET A RECIEPT WHEN YOU BUY FUEL !!!!

1 week later the exhaust emissions warning light came on but no limp home mode.

That came up as the glow plug management relay at the dealers who replaced it.

Since then nothing.

Thanks for the posts and the encouraging news that even where there have been problems it didn't seem to lead to a trend (although a week later a car valet company at Heathrow did then lose my main set of keys :) ).

Still I have some things to look forward too.

1) The roof mounted DVD player goes in this week along with the multimedia adapter for the front screen

2) It goes into Van Aaken tuning in Crowthorne for it's custom ECU remap. Not sure what the final BHP and torque figures will be (nor ar Van Aaken as it is a custom map) but we are both expecting something around 190BHP after the remap. They have a rolling road so I will know what the improvement has been.

Blimey - you're brave! That'll be a beastie once remapped!

Ford Escort 57 miles on the clock out on its' first rental, connecting rod through the cylinder block. Transporter of new Rovers, 4 out of the 7 taken straight to the dealers with problems.

Will put a posting once I have had the remap done and quote some before and after prices. I'll see if I can negotiate a special rate from them if the job is well done.
