Corroding brake discs

Featured Replies

Do most others suffer from the outer part of the break disc (i.e. the part that the wheel fits onto) corroding?

Mine was like it from new but the dealer sorted it out by rubbing them down and painting with some hammerite paint.

It's started happening again recently but this time the dealer won't do it under warranty and apparently last time it was done as a goodwill gesture. Spoke to Skoda UK who say that as this is exposed untreated metal it is subject to corrosion and that it can't be rectified under warranty.

My response was that that really isn't my problem if they use sub-standard parts or choose not to treat the metal and that I have never experienced it before on any other car.

I think this is appalling. The outer part of the brake disc is highly visible especially with alloy wheels.

Anyway, I've asked for a written response explaining the problem and why they won't rectify it under warranty and specifically asked that they state that this is an acceptable 'feature' for a Skoda.

What other responses have been received from dealers and Skoda UK on this problem?

TBH mate it happens to all, irrespective of make, model etc...;)

Pretty much normal. My old Boxster with its huge alloys was exactly the same.

Why've I only noticed it on this then and not on my Golf or TT? Just seems odd to me.

Most cars have this. Its only surface rust. I wouldn't worry.

All cars do, basic chemistry, iron rusts.

Audi's have the bits you see sprayed silver if you buy the originals and top quality replacement parts. I almost bought some until I saw the cost for my Octy.

Corroded discs is a bug bear of many cars, and smart alloys make it much more noticeable.

I note from my VIN decoder listing, that Geomet discs are listed. I believe Geomet is an anti-corrosion (probably zinc based) coating that stops the cosmetic rusting of the exposed but not scrubbed by the pads parts of the disc. This is the reason Audi etc discs look better, but I guess the coating burns off eventually.

I would take some comfort from the fact that unless there are big section losses the rusting is only cosmetic.

Les.

Here's the Geomet data, including the VW approval:

DACRAL

Interstingly enough, never had this on my Fabia estate at all.

It is happening to my Octy II too and it does look unsightly and I have never seen it before or heard about it until I got an Octy II.

Mine are painted with silver hammerite - That seems to solve the problem ;)

I've got an 07 plate combi and looks as if the disks are coated / painted. I didn't do it and my dealer didn't mention anything when I picked the car up (brand new).

Maybe SUK have changed it for later cars?

Mine have 15k on them and they are fairly good, couple of small lines. The hubs are definitely quite noticable and hence why you see it more.

Mine are still quite tasty actually but are going rusty all the same.... .......when i get some time and hopefully before the end of summer i am going to treat with a little Hammerite...that should sort...
