Problem with ERV on and Octavia Diesel

I have just had a 90000 service on my 53 Octavia 1.9TDI - the following day it broke down and it turned out to be a dirty ERV causing the valve to stick!

does anyone know if this is a common problem and should jt have been something that the garage check as part of a 90K service? it have been regularly serviced every 10K and this is the first major problem.
