Thinking about changing to 17" alloys

Featured Replies

I have a Octy vrs with 16" alloys, I am thinking about changing them for 17" vrs alloys.

Since I wanted a vrsthought it would have 17"s but alas it had 16"s.

Is there any advantages/disadvantages to doing this, my 16" alloys and tyres are mint condition so I should get a good price for them, what would you reakon to having the new alloys painted in gunmental or another colour? (the Vrs is Rally Red)

What do you have? An estate? I think some of the very early hatches had 16" wheels?

Gunmetal or Graphite grey would look great on a red car! However I am a bit of a purist and like mine as Skoda intended. Your car, your choice however.

Its a 51 plate vrs, not an estate, its in Rally Red which i think is much nicer than corrida red which supercedes it. It had 16s as standard a nd i just think the 17s give it that little extra presence if you know what i mean

Disadvantages - a harder ride and tyres more prone to being destroyed by large potholes, possibly tyres will be dearer. Also you will have to check, using Tyre Calculators, what size will be suitable i.e. not alter your rolling radius by too much.

IMO save your money for some other mod

My first Octavia vRS was a 2001 51 plate, hatchback in red and was also fitted as standard with 16" alloys. I now own a 2003 Octavia vRS hatchback with standard 17" wheels and must say I wouldn't be able to tell the difference apart from the extra cost of the 17" tyres !!

There are 4 17" on ebay at the moment

You can choose to run the 17" rim with a 225/45, which should maintain a fairly compliant ride IMO.

I'd go for it. And you'll probably find a suitable buyer for your current 16s here, if you so wish.

I think the 17's look noticably nicer. The proportions are just spot on where as with 16's the arches tend to look a little bit gappy (if there is such a word)

Whether its worth the cost to change though, I'm not too sure. When I bought some alloys for my last car the tyres that were fitted didn't seem to make a huge difference to the price they went for. Maybe start keeping an eye out and pick up a set with decent tyres with plenty of meat on them, then when your current tyres get a bit worse for wear do the swap and sell your old ones on?

I'd try and get a feel for how much you could potentially get for your 16's A) with good tyres and B) with worn tyres then make a decision from there :)

changed from 16" - 17" wouldn't do again.

done for cosmetic look.

the ride is so much harder.

tyres r more x pensive.

wait till u wear your original tyres down then think about it..

there is a set 17" vrs 1's for sale on ebay. seller on here with a thread... :D

4 Skoda Octavia vRS Alloy wheels & tyres. Original on eBay, Wheels with Tyres, Car Wheels, Tyres Trims, Cars, Parts Vehicles (item 230166430625 end time 05-Sep-07 10:10:21 BST)

I couldnt tell the difference between 16" and 17", having driven cars with both. I am surprised that your 51 reg's both had 16s, because my old Y reg one had 17s on it. The UK brochure at the time stated 17" was standard, and it was only early press review cars (All Y reg) that came with 16s. Sounds like a dealer somewhere in the chain has done a sneaky and swapped a set of 16s with the 17s to make another customer happy.

I'd say that was spot on for an explanation Manny. Does seem odd on a 51.

As for re-sale on the 16s, I'd say a Fabia owner would be the most likely target audience. And as they'd need to change tyres, to a 205/45/16, current tyre condition is irrelevant.

I want to change my 16" alloys too for 17"s (mines a 51 plate too)...

It seems I'd have to spend loads to do this though...

A good set is what,

Most men would pay a heck of alot more than

To be honest i'd wait till you need new tyres then get 18s. When you need new tyres anyway the extra cost of the wheels aint so bad.

Not sure I quite agree with your budgeting. It should be possible to go for a decent tyre at

It was more the overall cost I was on about really, after you've sold off your current wheels.

Yes, there are some very well priced wheel packages available. But they're cheap for a reason I feel - replica to me also means replica quality - chance of a poorer standard of manufacture and finish, possibly softer metal - higher chance of buckling perhaps? Not worth it IMO.

And insurance doesn't always go up when you change wheels, especially if they're also still from the same car manufacturer :)

Steve

So what do you think I could get for my 16s? :)

...good advice and the reps too. Hadn't really thought about it like that.

Depending on condition I'd say perhaps 200-225?

Join freedom and then you can pop a for sale post up. Could say they weren't available until you'd swapped? Just an idea...

Steve

17s all the way, the 16s look piddly for a large car such as the Octy.

Also, it makes cleaning the wheels easier.

I can't post in the for sale section, wassup with that? :)

Might put them up for

Freedom members... maybe I should read for a change!
