Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

Featured Replies

I have the opposite problem with my auto dimmer - it stays dimmed almost the whole time at night.

Does anybody know if it is possible to adjust the sensitivity?

Failing that, is there any way to undim manually - if I turn the auto sensor off it stays dimmed.

Thanks for any help.

Chris

Sounds a bit knackers if staying dim :)

If you want the mirror to darken imediately just cover the front facing sensor.

Electronic dimming mirror.

I have found that the dimming mirror does not operate well enough in urban, lit areas; I still get dazzled by cars behind. (And No, you can't manually dim the mirror.)

The mirror operates by comparing the light received by the front-facing sensor on the mirror with that at the back. If more light hits the rear-facing sensor, the mirror dims. In well lit areas the light falling on the front-facing sensor prevents the dimming action. Headlights of vehicles coming towards also slow or stop the dimming action.

I have just tried an experiment to improve the performance. I cut 4cm of thin wall 15mm garden water pipe at an angle of about 20 or 30 degrees and attached it over the light-sensor at the back of the mirror (facing the screen), with bluetac, angled towards the near side. This made an immediate improvement, perhaps too much as the mirror is now fully dimmed in lit urban areas, with or without headlights behind. Out in the country a distant pair of headlights quickly turns the mirror green, as the lights approach. I shall try shortening the tube to tune the performance.

My Nov 2007 L&K 2.0TDi dims both interior and wing mirrors. Excellent safety aid.

Can anyone help me out of confusion? I read this thread a few weeks ago, before I took delivery of my 4x4. According to the brochure this should have auto dimming. I had to test with a torch on the sensor to convince myself that the interior mirror was working, but the door mirrors definitely do not. Is this yet another example of confusing Skoda literature, where auto-dimming can mean different things on different models?

Could the rear-view auto-dimming mirror be retro-fitted to a vRS perchance? It' something I would find useful for when my hands are full (i.e. full of lock on the twisties round here...)?

Is it just a case of buying the mirror & replacing the standard (with attendant wiring)?

On a 4x4 the door mirrors are not the auto dimming type (that only comes on the L&K I think) - which is why they don't dim as per the rear view mirror.

Thanks!! Skoda should really read the Trade Descriptions Act, because I have found so many bits that are, sort of, ish!!
