New thread (The Nut and Bolt Type)

Featured Replies

Heres the problem, got a stripped thred on the hub were the 7mm hex bolts go in to secure the caliper. Was thinking about taking hub off and welding hole, then drilling and put new thred down through it. Only thing is I am having problems finding out what the thread of those hex bolts are. Anyone Know ?

Hex bolts can be metric or imperial.

I would use a Heli-Coil instead of threading a weld.

Just drill & tap them over size...

No, that would not work as these bolts are the steady bolts that the caliper floats on. He really does need to know the thread size of these bolts and fit a cross wire insert - or a TEE-sets, and probably use new caliper retaining/floating bolts. Of course I could be wrong and he is really meaning the the bolts that the caliper bracket mounts onto the suspension leg with. I didn't think that you could manage to destroy this thread - would have thought that the bolt head and/or hex key would have expired first - but there you go - the advised tightening torque setting on these caliper "slides" is quite low - is it not? Ah, I've just re-read your post and it IS the caliper bracket bolts - I'll get my coat - I thought these bolts were bigger than M7 - that was what mislead me - ie some people call 7mm bolts the bolts that need a 7mm hex key - they are not M7 UNLESS IN EXTREME CASES.

they wont be imperial on a skoda:rolleyes:

is it the front or back??

i think they have a 9mm x 1mm thread on the 7mm allen bolts that hold the caliper on

Don't you dare retap and fit oversize you will weaken the hub.

Helicoil is the way forward, infact the thread will be stronger than the original.

I know the bolt securing the caliper to the hub are M12x1.25, The kit with the drill bit is about £40. The new bolts are about £2 from the dealer.

BTW a repaired hub looks like this :thumbup:

It takes about 20 mins to fit a Helicoil. Well worth the £40!

Whoops!

It's acutally M12x1.5

This is the kit you want;

Do not go down that road until you have tried inserting a good thread bolt from the other side, This usually corrects any damaged thread without re tapping or fitting coils
