That's a good way to attract the police attention! :D

don't worry about it - as with most modern "fog"lamps, they are about as useful as a chocolate teapot if it's foggy.

lol cheers, they work!

I have seen the icons for the fog lights on the dash and tried to turn the dial left to turn them on, but it wouldnt budge, I also assumed the Octavia never had them as I am used to them at the bottom front of a car, separate from the main headlights.

I did read the manual but must have missed this.

took me a while to work it out. tried turning it all the way round ooops them started pulling at it and hey presto lights came on. canny little way of doing fog lights.

unfortunately because they are sequenced on the switch, it does mean that you HAVE to have the fronts on if you want the rears :(

Come the winter I will be seriously considering taking a fuse or bulbs out of the fronts.. if it's foggy enough to need the rears on in the dark, the fronts won't want to be on

I agree. I always thought these sorts of switches where silly. Don't know if the Higway Code has changed, but it used to be that rear fogs could be used in any reduced vis (such as heavy rain, but there was a specific level for fronts (100m i think), which makes (made) the switch the wrong way (ie rears should come on first)

However, if I'm at the front of the queue, I may want fronts on. If I'm at the rear, just want rears on. With a switch that only allows 1 set or both, I'm always going to end up dazzling some body :(

Ballc0ck$!! It's not a regular occurance, but I've had to use the fogs on all 3 of my regular drives a few times, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the Octy's do work as advertised.

the ironic thing is that if a front foglamp is going to be any use at all in fog, it needs to be mounted low down with a very sharp horizontal cutoff, and setup/alignment is critical to minimise back-reflections. If this is the case, they won't dazzle anyone. Hence my previous comment about modern foglamps being useless - they are nothing more than a fashion accesory in most cases :)

ps.. Ken, yours are either very different to mine or you have different kind of fog :D

Is your's a pre or post-facelift car (presuming we're talking mk 1s)? I judge effectiveness by bounce-back, since range is limitted by power and fog density.

2002 Ken, so not sure what that makes it?

Fortunately "down South" we don't get real fog that warrants the use of foglamps for their intended purpose, so I won't need to worry about it LOL. It seems to be mainly BMW's that feel the need :D

Post facelift car, like mine.

We don't get conditions that need fogs very often here either, but on the odd occasions that we do, there's nothing else can match having them.

Having the front switching on first then rear seem to be a common feature on several cars I have driven. Only my Fiat Bravo had separate switches, one for front and another for rear. At least with the Mk1 Octavia the police would find it difficult to see if you had the front fog lights on when you should not (and give you a nice fine!). Maybe all fog switches should be configured with rear on first then front, maybe that would stop all the t%ss$rs having them on all the time and dazzling me (I always love it when a car has side lights on and then fog lights as well-Why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Rant over- sorry about that!!!!

Just fog lights are called fog lights for a reason - to be used when it is foggy and not other times when it maybe a bit cloudy or damp.

If its really foggy thats the most effective way to use them. FWIW I've been driving for 7 years and the type of fog I'm refering to I've only had the misfortune to drive in once.

There are the planks that stick their fogs on "cos they look wikkid init!" and forget that they haven't got any headlights on though. How I don't know as the foglight beam is about 1/4 as long as the dipped headlight beam

Apart from xenons :D:D:D

IF you needed rear fogs, you WOULD want front fogs. The point of front fogs is to set beam lower and bounce back from the fog less, you turn your headlamps down to sidelights, slow down and drive on the fogs. Better visability. If you can still drive fine on headlights, you don't need the rear fogs on as others will see you with their headlights.....
